I was probably six years old when I first saw the movie Teen Wolf, one of my childhood favorites. There was a classic scene where Michael J Fox is “urban surfin’ “, riding on top of his friend’s van through the streets (probably one of those things they wouldn’t allow in a kids’ movie today, since all kinds of idiots would be trying it…. but it was the 80s and adults didn’t give a shit about kids’ safety, so I’m sure many people did get jacked up trying this themselves🤦‍♂️😂)

(Also hilarious is that teenagers in 1985 wouldn’t have been listening to The Beach Boys, I noticed a lot of stuff in the 80s and into the early 90s where they’d have then-modern teenagers getting excited for what was “oldies” music from the 50s and 60s, and you just knew some middle aged, out-of-touch writer put it in. “You know what the kids love today? Doo-wop music! Just like when we were kids!”😂)

Anyway, long story short, that scene was when I first heard The Beach Boys, and I loved it. Saw this album on vinyl at a store around that time, and I’m just old enough that we still had a record player, lmao, so I got my parents to buy it for me.

What was the first album you picked out for yourself as a kid?

40 years later, looking at the track list, still a banger…. and this was already like 20 year old music by the time I was hearing it. Legendary sound and style from a legendary group.

The first CD I ever asked for was Mariah Carey and my mom made a mistake and got me Shania Twain instead which was how I learned about her music. I loved Mariah when she first became famous but later, she began to sing dirty songs and I was disgusted with her music.

The first one I bought with my own money? I went to a record store about a mile from here called, Record Rip-Off. Oops!! No, it was Record Rama, they WERE rip-off artists!! I bought a copy of, "Honky Tonk Women" by The Rolling Stones and, when I played it at home, it skipped all over the place!! I went to take it back for another copy. That one gave me shit, too!! Then I noticed there was a crack clear across the one half of the record! This time, instead of getting another copy of the single, I discovered that their new album, "Through The Past, Darkly" had that song on it so, I bought that album! That was my first album. I had loads of others but, they were all bought FOR me, either as presents or at my request from a relative.
