I do a lot of self editing where I will come up with an idea and then abandon it because it does not measure up to my standards. I think most people would be satisfied but I'm not, I always think it's doesn't measure up. I think I'm more talented then many writers that are well known in the industry but I always feel like it's not good enough. I have loyal friends but I don't know too many that would be willing to spend 70 hours reading my content and editing it. My biggest challenge is not having mentors who can help me improve my skills. I'm not in an official writer's school where I can access knowledge on how to improve my writing skills.
Writing a story is one thing. Honing writing as a craft is more difficult and that differs a good writer from someone who merely published a book bc it fits a current trend. There's a reason why editors work so long with writers on their novels before they get published. The first draft is the easy part, but you have to sit down and do it. After that, the real work comes. The editing, checking the beats, killing your darlings, changing things up bc they don't work out, making sure you're writing all of the characters not ooc etc. etc. etc.
Once you did all of that, it might be useful to look for an agent. They usually make it easier to get in contact with publishing houses - unless you plan on self-publishing. In that case, your efforts needs to double bc you won't have the same resources and amount of people to help you with the project and marketing. Just get down to it and do it bc you love it in the first place.

Not if you know how to write. I've got 3 of them in the works, at the moment, although two of them are mostly reference books.
It's easy to write and self publish a book. It's just not easy to make a living out of it.
For most people, yes. But for people with some creativity and a knack for writing, probably not.
