Is The Era Of Mega Stars In The Music Industry Over?

I was thinking about this the other day and it feels like the era of mega stars are truly over in pop culture. Between the 1950s-1980s there were plenty of big time stars Elvis, Michael Jackson, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Prince, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Led Zepplin, George Michael, Elton John, Whitney Houston, Bowie, Frank Sinatra, etc.

I was reading this book about the rise and fall of rock stars and its basically about why there were a lot of mega stars from the mid 50s - 80s and then the author talks about as to why it was starting to decline around the early 90s. What do you all think... Is it truly over?

Artists like Eminem and Taylor Swift can both make claims to be on a similar of not greater level. Although in Eminem's case he'd have to backtrack along memory lane a bit.

If we account for modern avenues of music like streaming and alike then Taylor Swift beats the Beatles in terms of revenue.

If you want someone to sell more records in a time where selling records is not a thing, or to be bigger on the radio when being big on the radio is again not really the focus then the era is gone.

If you only concern yourself with how big a star is then again: Taylor Swift is probably bigger than Beatles, MJ, etc. There just isn't a fair way to measure it.

I would probably argue Swift again beats that. But I understand the spirit of it. As we have practically endless options today it is difficult for every news station and paper to report on the same artist having a haircut or changing how everyone dresses.

But in magnitude, numbers, so on, they are already beaten.

Yeah there's still mega stars.. You got Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Drake.. It's not like it was back then of course.. Different rules different times different eras.. But Mega stars will always exist.. Just not in the same way.. It's just that in this day and age any random person can gain their 15 minutes of fame from a silly video that gets famous.. Now everybody wants fame, instead of just idolizing..

Will these current superstars be as popular as the stars of decades ago? I doubt it, they suck. But if anything the star factor in music is bigger than ever, it’s has totally replaced popularity based on talent. Swift could release an album of her recording her morning shit and it would go platinum just because it’s Taylor Swift

No. Just different people are "famous" to different generations.
Kids these days go on about all sorts of allegedly "famous" people I've never heard of and never wanted to. The people I consider famous are all of similar age or older than me... and steadily dying off.
