One is in a historical fiction book about a man who tried to make something of himself in Mississippi as a riverboat pilots cub, but the boat was destroyed at Fort Henry, when he was caught up in the civil war.

He subsequently fought as a civilian volunteer at Fort Donelson and Shiloh after that. After that, he began his journey to go to Vicksburg, Mississippi, after Nathan Bedford Forrest informed him that his fiancé's uncle had gone there after Nashville fell to Union occupation

Along the way, he met a man named "Pie", they talked about the war, and when he mentioned that he was at Shiloh, Pie exclaimed, "Lord, have mercy! A fellow from back home was at Shiloh, he come back with both legs blowed off. He didn't live long after he got home, poor devil. "

When they got close to Vicksburg, a wagon rolled by, the little girl riding in it, along a slave convinced him to stop and give them a ride.

During this ride, Corey (the main character) talked with Henry (the slave driving the wagon) about the war. Henry quietly told Corey that the girl's father wasn't coming home. Corey said he heard rumors about a ground invasion, and Henry replied, "Well, I expect they will soon enough. I never knew a Yankee who knew to leave well enough alone, have you"?

Corey thought about slavery for the first time and inquired, "You don't want the Yankees to come here and set you free?"

Henry replies, "Well, there's things that need changing, that's for sure. Just because Maggie (the little girl) and her folks treat us well doesn't mean it's like that all over. But it seems to me that there's a way to fix things without fighting a war over it. And as for being free, I can leave Mississippi any time I want. There's nobody to stop us, but we ain't going anywhere. Nothing is going to happen to Maggie and her mom, not while there's breath in this body. "

When they reached the mill, Corey and Pie departed, and Corey held out his hand to Henry, who hesitated, before shaking it.

Kind of strange how the black man would say he's free to leave, knowing full well other black people are definitely not free to leave.

What he meant is that there are no men there to stop him from leaving, they're all off fighting in the war, and the patriarch of the farm died at Shiloh, so there was nobody to stop Henry, or the other slave from leaving Maggie and her mom to fend for themselves

Well they had a very lucky experience having owners that did not rape or torture them. That was not the norm for blacks.
