I was shocked to see the audience score on rotten tomatoes at 44%, much lower than the critic score and much lower than I would score it. There is not a small sample size of reviews either. I have to admit that I guess I was all wrong about the public perception of this movie.
My theory is that because audience scores continue to be updated to this day, I'm guessing it has not aged well in the 28 years since release. Some offensive jokes, lots of "juvenile fart jokes," as one 2024 reviewer said. And the whole Eddie Murphy playing all the characters at the dinner table narrative isn't as fresh these days, maybe?
Has this movie just aged poorly, where all the things that I thought made it a comedy classic of the 90's have just made it annoying to the next generation? Is The Nutty Professor just another film rejected by the easily offended? What gives?

I always thought that was one of his worst movies. I loved all the Beverly Hills Cop 1 2 and 3 a lot, as well as 48 hours/ another 48 hours with Nick Nolte.. Trading Places was another good one, I just hated The Nutty Professor because I just didn't find it funny!
You shouldn't be shocked. It is a stinker of a movie, not that the original was much better.
i guess people prefer thin actors.
that year how could it compete with exciting twisters and independence day n mission impossible same year. but it did make top ten in box office but
imdb hid the real numbers so they might have fudged it knowing we can't check.
