in a book I writing for Wattpad l originally planned on making the prologue a oneshot but since the first chapter pick up where the prologue left off I thought I do my readers a service and turn the oneshot into a prologue that way they won't have to read a separate story to understand what going on however I didn't expect for it to reach almost 3000 words I foreshadowed aton of stuff introduced the protag, their parents, and important characters to the story and spent a lot of time in flashback land and the remainder of the prologue in present day then the protag leave the hospital and we see her relationship with her parents, classmates, and therapist once she leaves the hospital and I was wondering if I was making the prologue too long with that information.

Your prologue sounds incredibly engaging! A prologue should generally be long enough to set the stage for your story without overwhelming the reader. While there's no hard and fast rule, keeping it between 1,000 to 2,000 words is often a good guideline. However, if your prologue is nearing 3,000 words and is densely packed with crucial elements like foreshadowing, character introductions, and significant flashbacks, that's still okay, as long as it keeps the readers hooked and doesn’t feel like an info dump.
Trust your instincts and remember that Wattpad audiences enjoy detailed and immersive storytelling. If it feels right for your story and flows naturally, your readers are likely to appreciate the depth and detail you’re providing.
Keep writing and have fun with it! 📖✨
