I omitted percussion because I don't know anyone who gets teary over a drum solo. Bass anything is not a tear jerker either.

We all can't be Prince, Dylan, McCartney who can play just about anything so let's be judicious!

I think many of them qualify. Piano and guitar are unique in that the player must carry the bass line as well as the melody. Most other instruments are single note or rhythm alone. Though that has never interfered with soulful saxophone playing.

But a talented musician will be able to get amazing sounds out of just any instrument.

My first thought is saxophone, but a grand piano or violin or cello might also fit. Then I think of Procol Harem's "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and even an organ might work. Perhaps it is more about the player than the specific instrument.
