People like and dislike a lot of things , so it comes down to what you like and dislike , don’t dislike something , just because someone else doesn’t like it. I love metal music and other Genres’ of music , and I don’t care what other people think or say, it’s my music taste and that’s all that matters to me. I have always been a die hard Rush fan ever since I was 11 years old , and I remember when I was a teenager, some of my friends’ would bust my balls about liking Rush and I would get into arguments with them all the time over it , and I would defend Rush every which way I could , by saying they have a better drummer and better bassist which my friends’ eventually agreed that I was right , when I compared Rush to the bands they liked , so I never stopped liking Rush and never will , I remember when a bunch of people started liking Rush and Rush started to get more recognition for their talent and a bunch of people were jumping on the band wagon , even some of my friends’ that use to dislike them , all of a sudden are saying Rush is awesome , I just laugh and shake my head My friends’ growing up just knew I was a die hard fan , and when Neil Peart passed away , all my friends’ called me to check on me , when Neil Passed it did bring tears to my eyes by how much their music meant to me through the years. Don’t get me wrong I like a lot of other bands but Rush has always been my number 1

I was already a guitarist and into Hendrix, Steppenwolf, Cream, Led Zep, and stuff like that. But when Sabbath and Deep Purple came on the scene in 1970 or 1971, I became a hard-driving metal fan. I love guitar and keyboard leads, complexity, and the ability of vocalists to knock it out of the park.
Metal diversified into many forms over the years. I like most of it and absolutely love some of it.

My wife, though, doesn't get it. Guitar leads are just noise to her. The music is too intense and she doesn't like screaming vocals.

In her 20s (late 70s through late 80s), she like to go to clubs and dance to disco.
I was a rocker and found disco offensive.

We met in 1994. Since we have been together, I have introduced her to a lot of music I like and she has come to appreciate some of it. I have also come to appreciate some of the disco stuff that I had hated when I was younger.
Fortunately, I was exposed to lots of music in my life and like a wide variety of stuff. So there is a lot of music that my wife and I both enjoy.
But she will never be a fan of metal. LOL

For the same reason rock music got banned in the UK in the 60’s and 70’s: it became heavily associated with a sense of rebellion against authority and was subsequently given a bad reputation by any and all authoritative powers such as the government, or the christian church.

Because they don’t understand it or have never been introduced to the kind of metal music they might like. There’s lots of different genres of metal music and many of them sound very different. Plus, it’s existed since the 1960’s and has evolved a lot, over time.

Good question, but I guess is boils down to "music taste". I dont like some other music as well and while I could name reasons they often can be summarized as "I dont like it".

People have different tastes in music. Nothing more than that. I personally like a wide variety of music, but metal is far from the top of that list.

It also depends on what you mean by metal. What I've noticed is that metal heads insist that anything they like be called some type of metal, even if it's far from being metal.

Part of me still has an aversion to metal because of the early days. It was about the people as much or more than the music. The 70s were a time of some very heavy partying. Most of those early metal heads were younger than me. Early metal head kids that were 13-14 years were at parties completely fucked up on quaaludes, PCP and whiskey. That was a huge turn off for me. They'd pass out on the floor and people would just laugh at them. There is nothing cute about a 13-14 year old kid passing out from eating too many ludes.

These were the kind of kids I associated with early heavy metal, and they were fucked up as hell. As much as I was a heavy partier myself, I wanted no part of that.

Probably because it's intricate, heavy, and aggressive. Generally speaking, it's not catchy or easy to follow, it's not upbeat, and the lyrics can often be very dark, though in some cases there are stories behind them (a surprising lot of Metallica's earlier songs are about James Hetfield's anger towards his father for abandoning the family, and then his mother dying of cancer a few short years later).

Personally, I see the arguments more today than in the past. A lot of metal today is super down-tuned (apparently, 9-string guitars are a thing) and I don't care for that kind of sound.

First off, how do you hate ON something?
Secondly, I was a big fan when metal first started in the late `60's. It still had SOME merit in the `70's. By the mid `80's, it no longer had anything to do with the music (except for bands like, Scorpions, AC/DC, Kiss, BOC, and one or two others whose names escape me, at the moment) and everything to do with hair and attitude!! It was MUCH too plastic!! In the 90's, a COUPLE more metal bands had more to do with musicality than looks but, by then, most metal bands were a dime a dozen and every single one of them had the SAME sound, the SAME vocals, the SAME subject matter!! IT WAS BORING AS FUCK!! Play one metal record and you've heard them all!!! Just like disco, rap or that pop princess garbage they shove down the throats of all the teenies and kiddie winkies!! GIVE US MUSIC!!! Something NEW!!! Something DIFFERENT, and we'll LISTEN TO IT!!!

As an avid guitarist with shredding capability and up until not long ago, fashioned a real nice mullet… the one reason I can say is valid for disliking the genre of metal, power metal, hair metal, glam metal, death metal etc etc… is due to the lyrics.
Some song titles are really not well though of and really sound terrible with voice distortion and all…
But the music aspect of it, the structure and speed of some of these musicians are by far well over the top.

There is some decent metal that doesn’t exaggerate the lyrics or titles, like dream theater…. But the few that did sound good did not carry on over to this generation.

Doesn’t mean it won’t make a comeback. If history has taught anything, is that it repeats itself.

Meh... It's not "hate" but there are certain decibels that not everyone is ready or equipped to tolerate. I tried to cultivate SOME sense of appreciation for it when I was younger bc that's what guys were into, but in general I'm not into it, you know? But then... to each their own, yeah?

Around me, 99.9% of the time I think it's  because of how it sounds, distinct metal riffs, distinct guttural style of singing . 0.1% of the time, this hate comes from the local fundamentalist in distress, convinced they're under attack by djinns, demons, whatever fits their paranoia.

I think because they do take the time to listen I mean there are bands I don't like either. Well.
It's not that I don't like him. There's just other music I would rather listen to, but I'd like anything just about that. Has a good rhythm beat It's music sounds like lyrics.
