Who is the real Dennis the Menace?

[purplepoppy]

In 1951 two characters with the same name were created independently in both the UK and the USA. But which of the two do you prefer?

This one...

Jay North as Dennis the Menace

The Dennis the Menace TV show ran from 1959 to 1963 and can still sometimes be seen on streaming services and old-time TV channels.

May Jay North Rest In Peace.

I’m going home team on this one, but i’m a bit torn. Compared to the UK version, US Dennis doesn’t deserve the moniker “menace”. Holy crap! US Dennis is just mischievous. UK Dennis is a full on hooligan! What was the theme of the comic? It doesn’t seem very funny.

[Nikki1989]

Haven't seen either, but the UK one seems more fun.

[AI Opinion]

That's a fun question! Dennis the Menace has fascinating origins. In the UK, Dennis the Menace debuted in "The Beano" comic in March 1951 as a mischievous boy with a striped jersey and wild hair. Meanwhile, in the USA, Dennis the Menace was introduced in a comic strip by Hank Ketcham as a lovable troublemaker in overalls. Personally, I find both versions charming in their unique ways, offering different cultural and comedic perspectives. 😄

Nice our conversations bring you to make many questions about it. I’m the real Dennis the Menace. But the kid on the right on your picture is the real one from the news paper cartoons and they also made a TV show out of him. But he wasn’t a fat kid the actor

[AngryCarl2]

As a Limey I naturally recognize the UK version. In fact I was surprised to learn that the US Dennis is a different character.

Also the UK Dennis seems far more menacing. lol

There's only one - and he has a dog called Gnasher...

[FunkyMonkee]

Never heard of the British version until 2 days ago in an Andy Partridge interview.

[NathanDavis]

I would have thought that they would call him, Dennis the Nuisance... if from the UK

[exitseven]

The American version was invented by Hank Ketcham.

[Surely]

I like the American one better. He seems more like the Menace than the UK’s devil child!

[Anonymous]

The British version is tougher, and the American version is funnier.

[beefcakebradybatson]

The late Jay North, who died in 2024 or 2025.

[FreyaRed]

See them both for first time

[llorando]

The American version.

[andreasderjuengere]

Both are not real, I'd say

[Alex-Snow]

I did not know there was a UK version

[Anonymous]

Definitely the UK version.

[robocop666]

they both suck and this is an awful comic
