Henry Cavill's iteration of Superman was great. In fact, he's the best Superman since Christopher Reeve.

I have two:

First, M. Night Shyamalan's 2008 movie "The Happening" was rather good.

Most people and critics do not like it. Roger Ebert predicted that but, like me, he saw how well-crafted this movie and story actually were.

2. My second unpopular movie opinion is that the 2016 movie "Arrival" which was up for Best Picture at the Academy Awards was NOT a good movie.

Let me be clear though... it was a good movie. An excellent movie. Until the ending. This was a science fiction movie of very good caliber until the big reveal ruined my suspension of disbelief AND infuriated me about what the protagonist did - which also helped ruin my suspension of disbelief.

Here's what pisses me off and, I have since learned, it pissed a lot of other people off too...

Setup: A dozen alien ships come to Earth and are just hovering. In the USA, the ship is hovering over Montana. No one knows why they are here. The protagonist is Louise Banks and she is a linguistics professor. She's brought in, along with a few other people, including physicist Ian Donnelly, to try and make contact with the aliens who we call Heptapods because they are like giant 7-armed octopuses. The aliens DO try to make contact and communicate with the humans. All this time, throughout the movie, there are these reflective moments in her memory which Louise is talking to her daughter, Hannah, who we come to learn has died as a teen.

What sucks: Louise DOES figure out how the aliens communicate... and interpret reality. Louise then "gets it" from their perspective and perceives reality like they can... OK, so what sucks? NONLINEAR TIME! It's like a time-travel movie, but WORSE. The aliens can perceive the future. They came because, in 3000 years, they will need humanity's help, so they are here now as a precursor to that... getting us ready, so to speak. BUT THAT'S BULLSHIT! Anything like this is bullshit. This turned this movie from a major A-class film to just a good looking but bad 1950s science fiction B-film. OK, here's the worst part! Louise and Ian were going to become an item and, as the aliens leave, we can see that... and that's when we learn the truth... Louise's daughter ISN'T BORN YET. Ian will be the father. Louise knows everything that's going to happen - that she and Ian will marry, she'll have the girl, the girl will die young, and then Ian will leave her because 1) he felt used and 2) Louise knew all along because she had that new perception of time.

Personally, seeing that ending, I felt raped. I felt my money was taken from me and I was given shit. And, furthermore, what Louise did was fantastically selfish. And, lastly, SHE HAD A FUCKING CHOICE WHICH MEANS THIS LOOPED-TIME CRAP IS HORSESHIT.

But “Arrival” is something more complicated. As we — and Louise — eventually learn, her mastery of the Heptapods’ language is giving her access to glimpses of her own future, first involuntarily, and later in ways that she can control. The visions she’s seeing of her daughter in which Hannah grows up, and in her teenage years sickens and dies, are not Louise’s past. They’re what is to come.

And at the end of the movie, knowing that Hannah will die; knowing that Hannah’s father, Ian (Jeremy Renner), will leave Louise once he learns that Louise was aware that Hannah would not live to adulthood, Louise faces her own future and proceeds into it bravely and unflinchingly. She loves Ian and parents Hannah with joy and passion. Despite recognizing the pain that will follow from those decisions, she makes them anyway, not because she intends to cause Hannah or Ian pain, but because she recognizes that beauty and goodness will result from her choices, too.

That essay was written by a woman, not a man, so she didn't react in a way that a lot of men like me did once the truth was revealed. I do understand what the essayist says about Louise's decision, but it is still a fantastically selfish one affecting the lives of at least two other people.

I am torn about this movie. It was excellent... until the cop-out infuriating ending.

Oh, one more opinion:

The 2014 Godzilla movie sucked.
I was furious that I paid $11.00 on a Saturday to see that movie.
It wasn't worth anywhere near that.
I think the 1998 Godzilla movie was actually more enjoyable and I paid to see that twice in short order. Another reason why I liked the 1998 version is that, since Godzilla is basically a mutated iguana, it seemed more real and plausible than other Godzilla movie. The 2014 was just a well-produced B-film... like Arrival. They wasted Bryan Cranston's performance by killing him off early. (Same thing they did in Alien 3 in 1992: kill off the most interesting character early.)

So, there, that's my unpopular opinion: Godzilla 1998 is better than Godzilla 2014.

3 days later, on Tuesday, the half-price movie day, I saw "Edge of Tomorrow" and that was spectacular and cost me only $5.50 to see. And, glad I saw it too because, as good and as highly praised by critics as it was, it did not do well. It was marketed like shit, but it was an outstanding film.

So: I paid $11.00 for a movie that wasn't worth $11.00 but maybe worth $5.50, but I paid $5.50 for a movie that was definitely worth $11.00 and then some. So, that made it a push for me.

In "Arrival", Louise raped Ian. Pure and simple. It was rape by fraud. Had he known what Louise knew, he wouldn't have agreed to that destiny.

That for skme reason Hollywood movies encourage women to cheat and that its morally ok for them to cheat or see multiple men at the same time.

Anyway someone pointed that out to me and I've been unable to watch most rom coms or romance movies since. The notebook when I rewatched it Ryan gosling's is a crazy stalker that will probably end up a drunk that beats her in real life and Rachel mc Adam's charcter is self destructive and loves drama.

Also love actually where the best friend of keira Knightly's new husband basically confesses his love with cue cards well thats creepy as hell and even where Knightly is going through the wedding video and its basically all creepy footage of her and no doubt some footage of her getting changed.

The problem with the new star wars sequals have a completly different problem than most people say.

• First the stories aren't as bad as people say. Its just that 7 and 8 are one unfinished story and the story of 9 is actually great, if done right, but would work much better as its own trilogy.
• Second, they didn't change the canon much more than when they did the prequals. Yes things changed but other things stayed surprisingly similar to the old canon.
• Third without disney as much as its hated we wouldn't have the good star wars stuff like clone wars bad batch, mandalorian etc. So I dont think disney ruined star wars.

Doing re-makes is incredibly annoying and uninspired. Or sequels that get made 10 or 20 years later and try to keep the same people in it even if they're now elderly. Hollywood has no mind for new ideas so they just keep recycling the same stuff, or they incorrectly assess the public on what they think we want to see, or overthink what we want to see, and then they still end up making box office bombs they thought would do great.

I also think the Fast and Furious movies need to give it up now, they are incredibly ridiculous. I saw the first one and half of the second one a long time ago, both of which were still fairly realistic. Now they're just brainless popcorn pleasers.

I hate Asian action movies with their stupid swords and martial arts nonsense. And I can't relate to the culture portrayed by the characters.

I also despise the technique of simulating action by employing close-up jiggle camera in the dark and super fast cuts. There is basically nothing to see and they rely upon sound effects to give the impression that something is happening. It's bad, low-budget film making.

I believe that movies of today are so automated and just don't look real enough to believe. Plus too much fast action flying from one thing happening to the next and back again makes my head spin...

I tend to enjoy watching true stories which are more calm and realistic.
