When should children see fear, sadness, death, and conflict in movies?

When should children be exposed to concepts like fear, sadness, conflict, suffering, evil, death, and loss and other such darker and more mature themes in movies and TV shows, and with a sense of gravitas?

What were the movies and shows you watched growing up that had those themes? If you have kids, when was their first experience with them?

My generation grew up with The Land Before Time, The Fox and The Hound, The Brave Little Toaster, All Dogs Go to Heaven, and other films that address these issues head on. When the actor who played Mr. Hooper on Sesame Street died, the writers and producers addressed it directly; the adult characters straight up said "Mr. Hooper died."
