How personal is your friendship?
We live in an age where friendship can just mean, some girl just followed you on Instagram and now she's your best friend, or you took one #selfie together and you're instantly sisters. Maybe that guy added you on snapchat, and now you know his whole life story, just because you viewed his My Story.
It could be my lack of life expierence, or maybe just the time I'm living in, but I feel like the meaning of friendship has changed humongously. Through my sixteen years I've learned that friendship has no set start date or end date, just like anything in life, but everyone seems to accepte that friendships end. If it's through a death, or even a silly/serious fight, maybe it's even just growing apart. But is there still such thing as true friendship?
There's so many different defenitions on what friend, friends, friendship means. It's a word that can be defined in so many different ways by so many different people. I personally define it, by using people. People have shaped and defined my word of friendship. My three best friends have been there through thick and thin with me, we take things one day at a time, and we're always there for one another. Those three girls have defined the word friendship to me.
My three girls have shown me what friendship is spouse to be, at least in my eyes. We talk everyday, and by talk I mean non stop texting, facetiming, and snapchatting our every breath and movement, and I mean literally. Each of us has a different quirk, insecurity, and annoying trait. But we accepte eachother for every flaw and perfection. We didn't just become friends over night, the years have flown by, and each day we become stronger and stronger.
I've noticed in recent years, when making new friends, people autmoatically assume we're the best of friends, and that we should never be apart. Maybe it's just in highschool, but even my mom has said something about people automatically feel as though they have the right to march in to her life and take the role as best friend. I could be just a giant bitch who doesn't want any other friends besides the three I have, but those three girls have worked their way in to my life, and have fought for the spot to be my best friend, just like I have to be in their life. What is friendship now? Just because we stand in the lunch line together, doesn't give you the right to call me your best friend, or because I'm tagged in a photo with you, doesn't mean we're like sisters.
Friendship should be worked for, it shouldn't be just a silly title, it should mean something. If my friendship with my three girls ended, I'd be devestated and my life would be completely flipped around, I'd have to revert back to a time where they didn't exist in my life, which would be when I wore dipars! Lucky for me it's not ending anytime soon. Where as the girl who calls me her best friend in my second period, I wouldn't even minded if our seats got moved and we were no longer best friends, I just happen to miss the journey of getting to know someone, and working to be their friend, it's so easy to be someones friend with the swipe of a finger, and an acceptance of a friend request.
