it either genuinely means that they think you are a sweet girl and are just complimenting you or it's their modest way of saying "god I wish I could be with you!" but they can't because either they are with someone, you are with someone, or you just aren't paying attention to the fact that they are sending out the signals that they have feelings for you - OPEN YOUR EYEBALLS GIRLFRIEND! you need to be on the lookout for signals. they could be very innocent, or they really mean something. ask a friend of yours to intervene and help you look for those signals!
It means they think you're a great girl but just not the right girl for them.
I have said that. It means one of two things: "I've enjoyed talking to you. I'd ask you out, but I have this whole girlfriend thing going on right now :)," or "I get that you like me and I really am flattered. However, you're just not my type." I would only say this to a girl I thought was pretty, even if she wasn't "my type." I'd rather chase than have a girl come on to me; so, that would probably be why she was "not my type."
