My parents won't let me study abroad? Advice?

Hi. I'm a 17 year old in my junior year of high school. I'm going through the college search process now and am really interested in studying in England. I visited schools over there, loved the atmosphere, liked the programs offered, and also feel in love the country and culture itself. It really appeals to me and I would love to live over there.

I have lived in the US most of my life and would like to try living somewhere else for a change. Honestly, I am not a fan of American culture (I hate "football"), the political atmosphere (Donald Trump...), the country itself, or what it stands for. I have always wanted to move somewhere else anyways. I studied abroad, worked abroad, and was born in and lived in Europe for a while, so it won't be new to me.

The school I like in England also offers a program that is hard to find here. It is also cheaper than the US schools. Getting a PhD there takes a less time than in the US as well.

Given this, I really don't know why my parents are so against me leaving the country. They know I don't like it here and want to be somewhere else. I can afford to study there since tuition is a lot cheaper than out of state or private schools. How do I convince them to let me go abroad? Anyone have thoughts or advice? What should I do about it.

College? aren't you already a bit old for UK college I mean I've been in one for a full year now do you mean uni, which uni do you want to go to? because there are some really good ones and you could be able to reassure your parents. I've been in the UK all my life and It's pretty safe round here less violent crime than US so maybe you can convince them that way but which Uni do you want to go to first?

Also do you have this all planned out do you know how to get a student visa for the UK, also prices are more for international students outside of Europe.

Yes, I mean uni. Sorry. college=uni here. I'm interested in University of Birmingham, University of Lancaster, or University of East Anglia. I'd like to study geology or climatology then get a PhD in something dealing with global warming. Getting that in the US is kind of hard considering half of the population has the IQ of a shrimp and doesn't believe in its existence.

I know its safe. I like how guns are illegal, more sane politicians, good government, and an actual culture. Brilliant country if you ask me. I tried convincing them through the safety and good public transport argument but they're afraid of terrorists. I mean, you guys have a much stronger border patrol system than Germany or other EU countries. Gun violence here is crazy and there is virtually none across the pond.

Well basically any country has better border policy than germany helps when your an island though, I read further down you want to become a citizen I'm not an expert but I imagine that's gonna be bloody tough, I know that Birmingham and Lancaster are pretty good unis a few of my older friends and cousins really liked it there, Going to Manchester or Loughborough myself though Manchester has a really good lab area and I want to do physic.

Thats true. Ours is worse than Germany's in my opinion. At least they intend to help people that need it. Ours just keeps the needy out, which is going against the very principle the country was founded on.

I read up on the citizenship stuff and it doesn't seem that tough. The university admissions people gave me words on it as well.

Thats good. I liked Birmingham especially because the location is great and they are some of the world's greatest and paleoclimate stuff. Lancaster is good in geology but not exactly the climate aspect.

Physics sounds fun. Any other uni choices?

Thanks for the guide! I've done most on the list. I could use someone that has been abroad. Having my parents speak to someone would be very useful. My grandma studied in London and is trying to convince them as well.

As for the job, I referee ice hockey here at the states. I spoke to some players and hockey people over in Birmingham. They have some referee and coaching opportunities which I plan on...

Cool, I didn't know there was even much of a hockey scene in the UK, mainly football round here, I hope it works out well for you and your parents let you go also I assume you'll be eighteen fairly soon I mean do you even need parental permission to just go.

well it's their money, so if they say no and you can't convince them then you'll have to work yourself to save up and travel and afford your own education.

that honestly just seems like a losing battle, cause it's gonna be so much time that you might as well just get an education in the U. S. if convincing them is an absolute no.

Most is mine actually because my great grandma left me some through her will. I just need to be 18 to obtain it, which I will be before I graduate high school.

that part is all up to you because you know your parents better than anyone.

you're gonna have to sell yourself real well to the point they are convinced this is a better route for you, and you're gonna have to do it in a way that pleases and appeals to them.

Well once you turn 18 you're a legal adult so they can't really make you stay in the US. It's your choice :)

The "I don't like American things, therefore I don't like America and redusw to be American and everything in x country is better because of that"... I love traveling as much a the next person... Studied abroad, myself, multiple times, but there's a difference between loving to travel and those people who are pretentious about it. And actually, it's more expensive for you to go to school in the UK. You're realistically spending anywhere between 45k to 81k per year (usd) on undergrad based on the program as an international student. Just study abroad. And I doubt a girl not even 18 can cough up that kinda money...

I genuinely don't like America. I hate the politicians, "culture", and lots of other things about it. Living here is annoying because I can't get anywhere without owning a car. I didn't grow up here either and still find some things to be pretty strange.

I love traveling too but it is impossible in America with the ridiculous distances, prices, and airport security. I'd like to be able to roam around more often like when I lived over in Europe.

I talked to an advisor and she estimated 28-35k depending on where I chose. They subsidize transport over there and students get discounts on a lot of things. It is cheaper for me to fly into Canada and take the train to my hometown rather than fly across the country to one of the American schools I like. It is the same distance flying anyways.

Everyone has to pay a ton in college. I inherited money recently and can afford it. I did the calculations, talked to financial advisors, and am serious about doing this. I know what I am getting...

1, I've also looked into going to school abroad in Europe because I love traveling, and 2, my friend ended up studying in the uk and he ended up in excess of $70k/year unless you have family in the country and negate international costs. Theirs don't apply to students in the country since it gets subsidies through taxes. Same way instate tuition works here. I got friends there and been. There's no chance in hell that your inheretence is 1/4 mil unless you're talking about your college savings, which is standard for the average child going off to college now. Anyways, I don't know what you want us to do. It's your parents' decision. I said study abroad... You just complained about that, too. I guess be miserable and take the L 😁

Well I entered my hometown and one of my university choice towns in there. Turns out England is cheaper.

You would need around 2,673.07£ (3,872.33$) in Lancaster to maintain the same standard of life that you can have with 4,100.00$ in Ann Arbor, MI (assuming you rent in both cities).

I do have family over there, which will save me a lot.

Even when it isn't subsidized, it is still cheaper than out of state. Tuition is 26,000 per year there and it only takes 4 years to get a masters equivalent. My back up American school is 35,000 a year. My first choice US school is 60,000 a year.

My education is my decision, not theirs.

Study abroad is temporary and you don't get to stay in the country very long. Like I said, I'm not even from this country so why should I stay here any longer?
