The is direct correlation between properly disciplined and well taught children, and productive members of society. Not a huge fan of the picture here though.

I think, if the only solution is to spank your child, you already have done something wrong in raising your kid.

Spanking is okay. Abuse is not. It's not how hard you hit the child. Body language, tone of voice, the slap sound.
My mother practically abused me because I was a small child who had to witness her screaming at me at the top of her lungs, accusing me of every single thing that happened in the household. Every day I have lived with my mother throughout my entire childhood, my early through mid adolescence, and less often but recently more common now, during the last formative years of my life. Oh and she refuses to let me be my own person unless it is on her terms. Just recently, she claims to have been in bad pain for the past week, and I haven't been buying it the past couple days. I think now she's using it as a crutch to get out of doing stuff. Now for the last two days, we have been completely out of food but I can't say anything to anyone about it cos my mom will flip out and bitch at me, just like ten years ago, on top of the fact that she is continuing to use her pain as a crutch to get out of doing stuff for me. If I killed myself she wouldn't even fucking care.
Well, that would be a lot of abuse

I thought my life was going OK until she was in pain. Now I have to put up with her constant yelling and complaints and laziness. The worst part is she doesn't even know how unstable and out of control she is being.

Just remove stuff that I enjoyed or liked, once when I was 3 or 4 my mom didn't let me play with children at home like having them over just to play with becuase I had been climbing over the fence at kindergarten and she wanted me to stop and apparently I really liked playing with friends at home so much that I didn't climb that fence ever again. They just removed everything fun which obviously isn't that fun, so you stop doing stuff that makes them take away your fun.

@Daechir Negative reinforcement as a disciplinary method doesn't work that way. It's about taking away an already existing POSITIVE stimuli, not adding a negative one.
Even just light spanking will not teach your kids to respect you, but to fear you. It's not gonna make them do less mistakes or behave better, but they're gonna learn how to hide it from you.

There is a difference between spanking and straight up abusing your kids though. While I will never completely rule out spanking and will be ready to use it as a last resort, I will NEVER abuse them! Anyone who beats, abuses, or causes harm for any reason other than methodical discipline in rare use cases should rethink their actions or be penalized in some way.
I was spanked as a kid. I hated my parents for it in the moment. Despite it, I look back and thank my parents for teaching me those lessons and making sure I acted with better standards than others. Simply put, It works in moderation for the most important corrections in character development.
