Am I a bad mum for taking my kids to a art museum that featured picture of naked women?

It's the summer holidays right now and I booked some time off work to be with my kids.

I have twin two boys who are 7 and my little girl who is 4. I thought it be fun and educational to take them to art museum one day.

My partner is very conservative as I am but I'm definitely the more open minded one in the relationship. I grew up in the city as well as traveling a lot and have been around lots of different types of people and seen and done a lot of things.

My partner on the other hand grew up in the country in extremely white area and isn't really open to trying new stuff as much as me.

Anyway at this museum there was some big photographs and paintings around of women's bodies. It was nothing they haven't seen when they have bath time with me and most art is nude I didn't think much of it. What's the point I trying to hide something that's completely normal from my children. I don't want my children growing up thinking women should be ashamed of their bodies plus none of it was smutty or graphic.

My boys just thought it was funny and kept saying "boobies" and were giggling. My little girl kept trying to join in with them and was saying "bobs" 😅.

When we came home and sat down for dinner. Are daughter kept saying "momma got big bobs" . My partner asked were she'd got this from and her brothers started laughing. He thought the boys had taught her it and he was really mad at them and said they shouldn't be teaching her rude words and was about to give both smacked bums but I explained it was my fault because I took them to the museum and that it wasn't even that big of a deal and was being over top.

My sure are daughter will hear a lot worse once she starts school.

He knew I was taking them to the museum I just forgot to mention there was pictures of naked women because I didn't see it as a big deal. I just got home after cooked dinner he came home and the kids started saying it. I didn't have time to tell him

Yes. You're living with the children's father but you are openly going against his wishes so you are teaching your kids that a normal relationship involves openly disrespecting each other. Instead you and the dad should have discussed the trip in advance and came to an agreement on what was best and only given the kid's the POV that you and dad are always in agreement. Keep the disagreements away from the kids.

Now, if you say that you don't think the art exhibit was a big deal, I'd ask why you decided to have kids with this guy. When you're a parent you need to be a role model. These kids will learn from you how they expect their future wife/husband to behave and how they should act as parents. It's not just meaningless/fun and games. What you do & how you do it matters.

I would tell the dad to stop being angry at you in front of the kids too.. But you both need to change how you approach things.

Of course, you can listen to all of the people telling you what you WANT TO HERE. That's the easiest route in life and part of why society is headed downhill now. Being our best isn't the easiest thing... otherwise everybody would be 'best'.

It's not pornography. It's natural and art shows that. Even schools will take kids round art galleries and/or museum... it's about broadening horizons, not titillation. Wouldn't want a world where kids can't see that, or approach sex thinking no one has ever seen a pair of boobs before :)

No, you're a great mom. This is the kind of spaces for kids to learn about art, colors, places, history, bodies, aesthetics, this are the special places kids should visit.

About the bodies, in a museum the bodies are presented in their natural way, not sexualized, not modified, just normal human bodies. It's great that they know what a real woman and a real man look like, because this days many kids are taught women have dicks. Kids are kids, that's why they find some normal things so funny, when I was little there was not a single kid in my class who didn't laugh at the word pp or tits, it's normal.

You would be a bad mom if you took them to those drag storytelling places and other oversexualized spaces, that's fucked up parenting.

That's awesome. I think it's great that they were exposed to art. Great teaching moment, especially the idea of normalizing bodies. I don't think you were in the wrong at all with it. Kids giggle at body parts all the time, they think they're funny.

I will say it would've been prudent to tell your partner and not leave it as a surprise as he is part of their upbringing as well. I may not agree with his view in particular, but still owe it to him as a spouse and parent.

The more you expose them to it now, the more you will normalize it for them. That makes for a healthier relationship and mindset for your child with that sort of content.

This is art and culture. Not pornography or content that kids shouldn't see. You're a good mom.

I grew up nudist. When are kids supposed to learn on their wedding night? You actually believe schools teach you anything? If you had raised them much more open and learn sex and nudity are two different things and both are normal!

I think MOST art museums have pictures of naked women. I don't know how you could avoid them unless you avoided art.
