Do you ever wonder if your family name and linage is untrue?

I was just thinking of this recently.

My family name goes back 900 years back to Scotland. The story is that after my ancestor helped hide the rightful Scottish king from a usurper, that king later retook the throne and gave that answer a lordship and land that my family name comes from.

I was thinking about how there was probably 30 to 40 generations from that ancestor to me; it makes wonder if along the line a wife of someone in my family tree had an affair or was otherwise forced impregnated with another man, if that’s true my name would be illegitimate.

Do you ever consider that possibly you might be descended from an affair.

I never really cared enough to wonder, honestly.

I can trace my family tree back to about the mid-1100's, and there's nothing notable about either side of my family. We've just kind of been existing, and nothing else.

If there was an affair, somewhere along the way, it wouldn't really change anything, so it's not worth worrying about. My last name doesn't even matter, because it came from an unwed mother about 150-ish years ago, anyway, so it's not the same name we'd had for centuries. 🤷‍♂️

I know for a fact that my family name is untrue, I have an Irish last name but all my family are black so it most likely comes from slavery

Yes probably.

I hope I never meet a black person who has the same last name as me, that would be awkward.
