What’s a family secret that shocked the hell out of you?

I’ll go first

One of my aunts had a secret daughter that no one knew about except my other aunt and my uncle ( her brother and sister ) one day she hangs this photo up in my grandmas house during Christmas and we’re all like “who’s baby is this”. Turns out I have a 6 year old cousin, at the time she was 2 when everyone found out about her.

My aunt lived in Europe for around a year while working for a job that had moved abroad and had her child there. Didn’t tell anyone just had a whole baby. When she came home she left the child there because for some reason she couldn’t bring her home (I don’t know all the details). I have yet to meet my little cousin.

My great uncle... none of his nephews and nieces (my aunts and uncles) would let us near him so never saw him, obviously didn't know. Found it odd the guy got a CBE from the queen for his work in Africa saving children and bringing them back here...

Turns out he was a kiddy fiddler, my uncle even went to the local school to warn them to not do any charity work for him with the kids etc. I knew nothing of this until recently. He passed away years ago, nothing ever happened to him, i guess part of that age of Jimmy Saville, Gary Glitter etc

When we moved to Florida, my dad had sex with the realtor who showed him the house he eventually bought during the first showing. They carried on an affair until, 10 months later, he asked my mom for a divorce and ended up marrying the realtor. They kept all this a secret for two years after he first met her.

This may not really be what your looking for, but my father's parents were full-blooded Cherokee. My grandmother (his mom) did not allow alcohol in there home or anywhere on there farm. My parents had to hold the wedding reception somewhere else because she wouldn't ease up her prohibition even for that. Years later (2006 ) One of my dad's sisters ( my aunt ) passed away and another of his sisters and I were cleaning out her house, I came across two stones roughly 8 inches square, flat on 1 side and a yellow stain on the flats, my aunt came into where I was working and Iasked if she knew what they were she said they were used by my grandfather to crush pecans and make a drink with sugar and water, I laughed and she wondered about it , I said grandfather was making alcohol, she was furious with me for saying such a thing but it passed quickly as she came to same conclusions, as she left the room she muttered so that's why mama never worried him.

Have you ever seen a Moonshine Still? I am from both a Farming and Roads heritage. There are old black and white pictures of Moonshine Stills in a tobacco barn. “Farming Subsidies” was the initial intent…My Great Grand and Grand parents were Entrepreneurial Moonshine Pushers 💪. Roads plus Farming equals booze and cigarettes…This town still does not have a stop light.

Another thing is arrests. apparently two of my uncles (my dad was one of four sons) were sent to labor camps in their youths. my mom was sent to one as well when she was a teenager but wasn't exactly arrested. one of those uncles was also arrested in the US for 5 years for having a loud argument with his girlfriend (not abuse or anything like that).

I’ve always been afraid of latex balloons unless they are filled with water. I found out only recently my sister - who is 20 years older than me - doesn’t like balloons either! But she never let on - she doesn’t have a phobia about them like I do but she still doesn’t like them or being around them. by the way - my mother told me a few months ago 👍😃

Apparently my aunt used to sexually touch my other cousin when he was younger. (my aunt and her family used to live with my cousin and his family). she had been doing this for years and we finally found out when my cousin did an interview for some movement and he exposed her. After that pretty much all my male cousins cut ties with her. and no one knew for years

My favorite aunt who I happen to look so much alike has a different father from my other aunt and mom. Her father is Cuban. No one knows except me and her and my grandma but my grandma doesn’t know that I know.

I didn't find out until years later that I had a grandfather who was emotionally abusive to my mom and her siblings and just destroyed their self esteem. He later died of a massive heart attack before I was born.

Did ancestry DNA kit. My aunts all show up as “half aunt.” Mom finds out that she was born out of wedlock and it was her step Dad not her real father and they’re all step aunts.

When I found out my mom gambled away my dad's retirement right before he retired. My dad was so embarrassed he and my mom went to visit my grandpa's for Christmas cause my dad didn't want to face our family without Christmas gifts.
