When people say they dont know what to get you as a present is it cos they dont want to put in the effort?

They probably don't know what to get you. Buying gifts is not easy and it's very risky. I think some people have a knack for it, but most don't. Except in rare cases when I know for sure they would like the gift, I hate buying gifts and avoid it.

I think something edible stands the best chance of the person liking it. That's assuming you know they like it, which shouldn't be too hard to figure out with edibles or drinkables. That also eliminates the very real possibility of the gift become clutter.
