As an adult, do you still take advice from your parents?

Ever since my mother moved to her own place, she generally calls me after dinner or I call her to catch up on life and stuff.

Sometimes I talk about my problems and she gives me her opinion on it, or asks if I want to pass by at her place the next day for a drink and a chat.

I once asked her why she's so keen on how I am doing or why she thinks I need her advice, she said she has twenty years of screw ups in her life over me so she can advise me to do the exact contrary of what she did in similar circumstances.

Jeezes. I mean, that's nice that y'all can talk on the daily. What's that like though? My parents were abusive for... yea, for my entire 18 years living in their house. Even after I moved out, the communication, which I'd hoped would improve, only moved to a darker (if possible) plane of manipulation and toxicity.

But that all changed a couple years ago! Now, my days are mine, my life is mine, and everything is a world's difference. I got: Rid of Them. Once I severed all communication and all methods of communication, they no longer could get in touch, even if they wanted to.

So it's actually really cool that the relationship to you and your mom did not deteriorate to the point where there is no relationship. Advice is like that penny on the ground- you can pick it up, or leave it, it won't really matter in the long run.

While she wasn't exactly abusive, my mother isn't winning any prizes, she was an alcoholic and stole from me.

Ha... my wife and my mother-in-law do basically the same phone schedule. All I see is a pissed-off mother-in-law who's been trying to remove me from the picture for years simply because she's worn her welcome off living off her sister... she wants to move in and has tried it before. All the advice I get to hear about is stuff to remove me from the picture so that she can move in.

Fuck that bitch. She's done shit for nobody and just bleeds money out of everyone. Why don't she just work or at least do something for other people?

Anyway, I'm sure your situation is much different, but keep in mind that they advise while keeping their self-interest at heart the entire time. When taking advice you gotta ask yourself... why exactly are they telling me this? It's easy to confuse with love or care when it's just some selfish bullshit.

On the bright side... maybe she just doesn't want you to do the dumb shit she did and repeat her own mistakes.

Yes, for sure. Also it doesn't have much to do with the fact that they are my parents. I would have taken their advice even if they weren't.
It has mostly to do with the fact that they are good people who have pure intentions and more experience in life than me and who merely happened to also be my parents.
I am aware that having parents who are good is a matter of luck, therefore I think I am certain that if they weren't good people, I wouldn't take advice from them.

I talk to my father and listen to his opinions he shares if I ask him... but I have my own brain and experience, so I make the final evaluation considering all the information I have and make a decision. I'm also the person who bears the consequences, not my father.

At this point my mother is 80. Most of her advice is dated. And she always wants to help me so I just listen to her to make her feel helpful. And occasionally she still has a nugget of good advice I can use. But like I say most of her advice is dated at this point. Honestly I think what's harder is getting her to take mine now. I think her head tells her she's old and it's my turn to look out for her. I just think she has a hard time turning off that motherly instinct that she's in charge. I replaced her furnace this summer (and considering the deadly cold we had a couple weeks ago a good thing to). But it was hard getting her to accept the help. Because she doesn't want to be an imposition on her kids.

My father died in 2007. My mother is still alive but will be 93 years old next month. She is becoming senile and is not really a source of advice for me.

But yeah I do, she has some good advice, although sometimes she does act like her experience is everything and she doesn't always listen.. But, I take her advice nonetheless and apply to where I need to.

I'm in my 20s and I still do. But then again, the advice they give me isn't advice, but rather to help mentally prepare me for certain things or situations. So, they're just doing their job being parents.

Unfortunately I had parents who tried to control me as an adult (I’ve been fully independent for 20 years). So I actually had to put up a very firm barrier with one and I told her exactly why.

I do, mostly from my father. I didn't put a lot of stock in his advice between the ages of probably 15 and 25, but since I've been married and have my own family now, I appreciate his perspective more and more now.
