What are your thoughts on hereditary first names?

E. g James, James Jr, etc.

I ask because the name Edith in my family has been passed down to the first daughter for 7 generations, and I think it's a really cool tradition some families have. I have also seen a family do it with middle names, each first son having the middle name John but a different Christian first name each.

Thoughts?

I love it. I have my great grandmothers full name (different surnames), her daughter has her middle name, my brother has her middle name and I do too of course.
My some day husband will continue is family name with his surname so I will continue my family name with my kids names.

At one time here it was common for men to inherit not only their father's name but their grandfather's, great grandfathers, great-great grandfathers and so on. Names got very long.

Can be used as a link through the line if there are multiple ones, like first is a new one, second from parent, third from grand-parent.

Makes it damned difficult for genealogists. Nicest thing to find is when parents use mother's or grandmother's maiden name as a middle name for their kids.

I have never been one for traditions, but I can see how it would work for some families.

They are very long and difficult to pronounce sometimes. I prefer new and short one.
