Why would my friend's ex-bf contact me out of blue?

We all are 25. I came to know him through my friend. He was a good friend of mine and I call or text him only when I can't get a hold on her. We talk in person only when she is also present. That's how I maintained that friendship.

They broke up about 8 months ago. It wasn't a shock to me since they both were toxic for each other. I supported her and naturally I stopped talking to him. A few months later, me and my friend drifted apart since she started being more toxic towards me. My life became more peaceful after cutting all toxic people out of my life.

Today, he texted me and asked whether I hate him and he apologized for lying to me in the past. He said that he felt that I hate him and that I drifted from him. I told him since they broke up , I don't have anything to share with him (since all the topics We shared was about her) and that's why I stopped talking to him.

When he asked about her, I told him that I am no longer friends with her and to ask someone else to know more about her. Then he told me that she doesn't liked me that much. I told him okay and we left it at that.

Since I cut her off, I didn't want to know more about it.

Anyways this whole thing felt weird to me and I feel that he has an ulterior motive since we weren't that close to begin with.

I feel the same way.
In the past, after their break up, she told me that he didn't liked me and now he is saying that she doesn't like me.

Honestly, when he texted me that , I wanted to ask him about her accusation, but I didn't..

Now , I feel that if I ask, it would only lead to a big headache

Sounds like they threw a lot of verbal garbage around, probably about everyone and everything. Toxic people. They don't even realize they are creating their own unhappiness.
