Nobody can give me a ride so what do I do?

Question

I don’t have a driver’s license. I take the city bus. Nobody can give me a ride to my cousins house which is 15 minutes away. My brother is out of town with his wife and kids, my sister is going to be at her mother in laws house, my dad is with his girlfriend and told me to figure it out and he’s tired of giving me rides all the time (not all the time), mom is not in the picture and my aunt and uncle are unavailable. Some people are doing Thanksgiving at their own houses. I don’t want to take Uber lyft. I guess that’s my openly option. I guess I’ll be home by myself so Thanksgiving.
My friends said, “That’s why you should get a DRIVERS LICENSE! Your dad is right. You need to start driving! Stop depending on people all the time. Get out of your comfort zone. What if the city buses decide to go out of business or Uber/Lyft?” They all have their licenses but their with their families and some are out of town.

My dad and siblings have been bugging me about getting my drivers licenses and I’m too scared to drive.

There are many many things you can do
The best thing you could do you just did it by admitting that you are scared to drive acknowledge it

Now do something about it do you have a go-kart track anywhere around your house that you can drive go karts

You need to get your driver's license you need to get a beater car and you need to have a family member get in the car with you take you to a Walmart or some place with a big giant parking lot and they can take you there at night and you can drive around in a circle you can do you can back up go forward you have to start getting used to it that's all it's going to take if you had a go-kart track you could get the hang of how the cars handle but you need to get out and drive is what you need to do whether it's in a big parking lot or a big dirt lot

I had bought a truck years ago that had been in a wreck I tore it all down put a full cage roll bar in it built it back up and then I would take my kids out they were five and six and they would drive of course I'd be in the passenger seat but we would go off-road and we would drive they would drive it and they would get it on they learned how to control a vehicle how to slide a vehicle how to stop how to park they learned everything at that age

It is okay to be scared because that means you're paying attention even more but at the same time it also takes a lot more energy and a lot more thought when you're scared I guarantee it once you get out and you start driving you'll be going everywhere nobody will be able to keep you home

But when you don't want to do something or when you're scared of doing something is the best time to do it take it on it's a challenge once you put a steering wheel in your hand you will understand what I mean you will like it but you have to get out in a dirt lot in a parking lot any place it has a big area no other people and learn how to do it

Ah man, that's a really tough situation you're in, girl. Not having your driver's license and not being able to get a ride to your cousin's place for Thanksgiving is super stressful. I can see why your friends and family are giving you a hard time about it - they're probably just worried about you and want you to be more independent.

And hey, if you do end up having to stay home alone, try to make the best of it! Order yourself a nice Thanksgiving meal, watch some movies, call your friends and family. You don't have to be alone just because you can't make it to the gathering.

I find 15 minutes is manageable if you have money for bus tickets and your house is safe. I used to work at place around 15 minutes or more by car from my house and I took the bus until I had passed my probation period and once I was officially hired, my family was willing to give me free rides to and from work. I did not mind taking the bus, I would show up early in case my bus was delayed on the way there, and then I would spend those extra 15 - 30 minutes drinking coffee and waiting for my shift to start.

I agree with your dad and your friend: learn how to drive and get your license. It’s  great  being independent in that way. Driving is only scary in the beginning because it’s something you’ve never done. Once get use to it, it’s a piece of cake. Seriously. Don’t let fear hold you back. I feel you, I was terrified of even being in a car for a long time due to a car crash I was in as a teenager. It took me a long time to get my license and feel comfortable to drive not just around the suburbs, but with persistence I got there eventually even driving in LA awful traffic. Just take your time and have a good instructor to help you out. There will probably be moments where you struggle but the more you do it the more comfortable you'll get.

Practice driving slowly in residential neighborhoods until you feel comfortable enough to go into service streets. You have to work your way up to it. And have your passenger be an experienced and patient driver so they can give you guidance.
