Why would a healthy baby suddenly die?

A mutual family friend is undergoing a loss. They suddenly lost their 4 month-old daughter. She was sleeping well in her crib and next thing, she was gone. They have no idea what went wrong. We're trying the best we can to support them during this hard time.

They've been trying to conceive for a couple years and then when they finally did, this happens. Why does this still happens? Why would a healthy baby suddenly die?

This might be something that can unfortunately that can happen called SIDS Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. It's not very well understood but basicly sometimes babies just die in their sleep. Factors that can increase the risk of it at least from a quick google search to refresh my memory a bit are...

Placing a baby on their side or stomach to sleep
Premature or low birth weight
Overheating the baby during sleep
Sleeping on too soft a surface
Exposure to tobacco smoke, either in utero or after birth
A family history of failure to thrive

According to the same search you can reduce risk by: Place your baby on their back to sleep
Keep your baby's head uncovered
Use a firm, flat, waterproof mattress
Keep your bedroom cool
Avoid swaddling once your baby can roll over
Don't smoke during pregnancy or after birth

I'm not a 100% on all of this but I know for a fact SIDS is a thing and my memory supports what I saw in the google search. I'm very sorry for your friend's loss, I don't know if there is anything more tragic than losing a child. I wish them the best and I hope they're able to have their baby or at least adopt if they need to. You're a good friend for supporting them.

Not until we can 100% know how the brain works

It means the baby was born with a good weight of 8.6 Ibs, all organs functioning well and no health issues.

did you find out the post mortum result? it will be on the death certificate. Fromwhat you have said it sounds like

Some cots have a mat that helps prevent this, alerts the parent if the baby isn't moving.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. About 10 years ago my neighbors lost their newborn to it.

Omg, it really sucks when that happens. My condolences to them. Were they able to have other kids later on?
It's not fair. They were trying hard to conceive and now they don't believe in a god anymore.

I'm not sure if they had more. I moved shortly after. It does really suck and there is no easy way to console someone who lost a child suddenly. Some wounds never heal and it's understandable as to why.
