Is it a double standard that you can't ever hit your parents but they can?

Over the years, I've noticed this reaction:

You're either in your late teens or an adult. You get into an argument with a parent, words are exchanged and your parents slaps you hard.

People's reaction: ''Oh you should've never spoken that way, disrespected your parent, you deserved it''.

You're upset at that moment, forget for a second it's your parent and slap back.

Pikachu reaction from the parent and people: ''Omg, how could you, that was your mother/father, you never ever hit your parent no matter if they slap you, just suck it up''.

I actually see two wrongs there, not one. Why would it ever be exception to strike anyone in anger just because of words? If it's not ok to strike your boss at work nor your spouse, then same thing should apply too.

Isn't that an example of a double standard?

Granted that hitting back wasn't right either (I would walked away), you're putting yourself at risk of getting hit back by hitting first.

Its a double standard for sure. Nobody should ever hit someone without the expectation of being hit back. If it were up to me, I'd make it mandatory for people to take self defense classes so that these one-sided interactions never happen. Violence sucks, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Nobody deserves to live in fear of physical harm.

I'm the type to walk away (unless I'm trapped and have no other option) because I hate fights but yeah I don't feel bad for parents that get hit back. Anyone that hits first (child, partner, boss, friend, etc) is risking getting hit back.

It is hypocrisy n wrong. If a child can, then defend themselves hit back. Kick their knees etc.

In my case i ratted on them to cops... it worked and the same year many states made official laws specified crime to hit kids. In the 80s.

I'll never understand how a disagreement with a loved one can turn into a physical altercation. It's weird to me.

No, it is out of pure respect you do not strike your mother and father who gave life to you. The only exception would be if you are getting beat by them in a violent manner.

I think respect should be mutual. Whenever there was a disagreement, my parents and I used to settle our differences by speaking and reasoning. Yes they gave me life but I'm a human being too.

While I would walk away if my mother were to ever slap me, I wouldn't be the one apologizing. My mother would be in the wrong there. I would deserved an apology, not her.

Nah that's fucked in my opinion. Im all for showing respect, but respect goes out the window once it's time to fight. Nobody should ever put their hands on someone else unless they're ready to fight.

@ClassicDropout My parents spanked me all the time when I was a child. It is a simple form of discipline for a child who misbehaves. Like I stated earlier, unless you are being beat in a violent manner; you absolutely never hit your parents.

I'm not that nice. A lot of people aren't that nice. I wasn't raised that way, and I'm glad. I would never put my hands on someone else because I know how I feel about the issue. I can only assume other people can feel the same way or even more intensely about it. Being hit was never normalized to me and never will be. Im grateful for that.

If they spanked you aall the time then it wasn't working. If it would've worked then they wouldn't have to continue spanking. It would've stopped much sooner.

Same here. There was no hitting in the household. My parents think it's weird to correct by hitting.
I would walk away because I hate fights but I can't really feel bad for a parent that got hit back. By striking first you pretty much risk getting hit back.

Spankings work because I never made the same mistake twice in a row. However, I did screw up and mis behave in other ways each and every time. I firmly believe in this form of discipline when it comes to correcting a child's misbehavior.

Honestly I would've used other methods too, instead of relying on only one thing over and over. I would probably take that child to a psychologist for the excessive misbehaviors. Too much isn't normal anymore. There has to be at some point that it has to naturally stop.

Do you have an age limit to spanking? It sure isn't going to work on a 13-15 year-old teenager for instance. If I were getting spanked at that age, I would actually laugh and probably be like ''is that all''. Is spanking the only first resort or do you followed it with other things too?

What hurt me the most was once seeing my father's disappointment and withdrawal of attention. That got me faster than just relying on hitting me with your hands or an implement.

Exactly. That's the risk taken whenever someone hits anyone first. I fail to understand the shocking reaction among people.
Personally I would walk away but they shouldn't get surprised they got hit back.

Honestly I'm actually not surprised nor shocked if the parents gets slapped back. Common sense tells me that if you hit anyone (regardless if it's your older child), you can't decide how the other person will react and there's a 50% you'll get hit back.

Personally I would still walk away but definitely expect an apology and for it to never happen again. I find that just as wrong as hitting a partner, a boss, etc.
But not everyone will react like me so yeah they're risking getting hit back by striking first.
