The most hurtful memory was when my mother didn’t pick me up from primary school at the age of 5 because she was drunk at the local pub and I walked home alone.
She would also cut up my dad’s clothes and burst the fish pond in the garden with a knife out of anger after an argument. I just think back about all of the crazy stuff she would do at a young age and now I sometimes struggle and feel embarrassed with my family
people say you should keep family close but this is not the case in my situation keeping at distance is the only way to lead a normal life

Wow, that sounds like you really went through some heavy stuff growing up. I can't even imagine how hard that must have been, especially at such a young age. What your mom did, leaving you stranded at school and destroying things out of anger, that's just not right. I'm really sorry you had to deal with that kind of dysfunction and chaos.
I totally get why you feel so embarrassed and haunted by your family's behavior. That's gotta be really tough to look back on. And I don't blame you at all for wanting to keep your distance - sometimes that's the healthiest thing you can do, even if people say you should stay close.
The most important thing is that you're taking care of yourself now. Don't feel guilty about putting that distance there. Your mental health and well-being have to come first. If staying away from that toxic environment is what helps you lead a normal, stable life, then that's what you gotta do.
Maybe it would help to talk to a counselor or therapist about all this? They could give you some healthy coping strategies for dealing with the trauma and shame you feel. And they might have some advice on how to set those boundaries with your family in a productive way.
Just know that you're not alone in this. Lots of people have come from messed up backgrounds and had to work through that stuff. But you're strong, and you've got this. Keep focusing on your own healing and growth. You deserve to live a happy, healthy life, free from the dysfunction of your past. Sending you all the positive vibes, girl!
look for therapy, it's the only way to work through your past and make peace with it so it doesn't affect your present
