1 yNo, they’re long gone. My parents had me in their 40s, they’re actually closer to being grandparent age to me, so my grandparents were almost like great-grandparents, relatively speaking.
My paternal grandfather died when I was about 9, and he made it to his 80s. I think he was already about 73 when I was born. I think that was winter of 1988, I found out coming home from some afterschool swimming lesson program.
My maternal grandmother (step-grandmother, my biological grandma died when my mother was very young, she didn’t really know her) went next, suddenly, at about 77, I think, and I was about 11. That was Labor Day Weekend, I was just about to start 6th grade. We had just come home from a BBQ at one of my dad’s co-worker’s houses, and I answered the phone. It was my grandparents’ neighbor, and my grandma had collapsed and was rushed to a hospital. I remember I got sent to stay at my aunt’s house for the night, and I was in bed when I heard my aunt’s partner answer the phone, and I could tell from her side of the conversation that my grandma hadn’t made it.
My paternal grandma died a couple years later, I think I was 13. That one was kind of out-of-sight, out-of-mind for me. She was in a nursing home for a while, I knew she was sick but it wasn’t really discussed with me. And then one day they told me she was gone. What I remember from that is being able to absorb the blow a little more maturely, and my first thought was actually to tell my dad I was sorry for him, vs just looking at my own loss in years prior.
My maternal grandpa lasted the longest, and he was the youngest, so that tracks. I think he got to 2002, probably about 83, and I would have been 23. He was in assisted living the last couple years. He stayed with us for a couple years when I was in high school too. He actually had a heart attack at our house, I was the only one home, so I had to put in the 911 call and all that. But he made it through that and lived many more years. I’m not totally sure how he died, kinda just old age, I guess.
But yeah, the last one died literally half my age ago, so I guess it’s been a long time. They were good folks, I miss ‘em, despite not having too much chance to get attached. Funny sometimes when you realize how short the time you knew someone actually was relative to the entire span of your life, haha
