I made sure all three of my kids can do an oil change, jump, start a car and change a flat tire.
1 moI changed one a while back. I did okay, because it was a smaller tire. The one thing I was worried about, was if I tightened the nuts enough! I made safely to school but a friend said the nuts were not tightened enough. My Yukon is a different story! It's a full size spare and I can barely lift it lol plus, I have to go through my back bumper to lower it. I helped my uncle change two of his tires 5ish years ago (he has a Yukon) so I do have some experience.

1 moCrazy coincidence. I had a flat tire this morning. I managed to get to work since it was so close. I called my brother to change my tire, but he didn’t have time to teach me.
You're amazing for teaching them.

u 1 moI recommend that most women join AAA but sometimes it’s very annoying and you have a two hour wait just to get serviced while you’re sitting in your car by yourself alone on a Friday night that’s not safe. They are so slow because they’re really busy. One time they made me so mad I blew up at them on the phone and they suspended me for like a month my service.

The problem these days is, the factory installed jack and tire iron on modern cars really suck. Some new cars don't even come with a spare.13 Reply- 1 mo

I have a 2019 Ford F-150 and the oil plug is made of plastic and it is hard to remove. I am afraid to force it and have a real problem on , my hands so I have been tsking it in to get the oil changed , The way thst oil is over 5 bucks a quart you really do not save much boing it yourself. When my kids were in college we had 5 cars and i would do the oil changed in a batch. It really saved a lot of maney.

I took my car to a shop for an oil change today because I don't have the time to do it myself. Just under $100! Synthetic oil, but still. . .

1 moYeah hubby takes care of all that stuff.
me? No. I just call him … so far no need yet, 😊

I agree… I have gotten a few “flats” (nail in) they were all easily fixed for $10-$20. at some near by local tire shops. No need to call hubby for stuff like that. He also makes sure to only is Michelins tires. So def. better made tires.
We actually just got one changed 2 weeks ago… hubby is always checking the cars… so he noticed that there was a nail. We just went downtown and got it done for $20.
He does check the fluids star plug etc… whatever makes him happy 😂
Of course I don’t want him to be doing too much or hurt himself to save $20-$200. Etc…
I rather him spend time with me hehehee….
Kids are driving now. Hubby taught my son how to do some car stuff so he can change tires as well now.
My daughter? 😂… def. don’t let her touch that stuff.

1 moI can do, and have done, all of those... many years ago. Well, I jump-started a neighbor last year.
11 Reply 502 opinions shared on Family & Friends topic. I probably average 2 a month (helping people on the side of the road). To the point that I regularly carry a floor jack and my cordless torque gun. Usually takes longer to get the spare out of the car than it does to install it.

1 moI know how in theory, because my dad showed me once when I was just learning how to drive and I didn't have a cell phone yet, but the one time I had to, one of the lugnuts just would not budge. I thought I was just a weakling (I mean, I sort of am lol) but then the tow truck guy couldn't do it without a machine either so I felt a little better...

1 moMy dad taught me back when I was 17, but I don't know where my cars spare tire is and I've never replaced one. Thanfully I've onely ever had 3 flat tires in my life and in all 3 cases I was with men who changed it for me XD
10 ReplyI don’t drive but if I did I’d have a man change the flat tire, I’m sure girls don’t change their own tire, we either call a towing company or find a man to help us with mechanical stuff. Maybe there are some girls that can change a tire, a few maybe.

@exitseven if a woman drives a car maybe she should learn how to change the tire

@exitseven okay, I never owned a car and I don’t want to wreck someone else’s car

@jen_oic I was in a graduate program with a woman who did not know ho to ride a bicycle. she was from Haiti and never got the opportunity when she was young. I got my wife's bike and I went to her house and taught her how to ride a bike. It took a little while but she was able to do pretty good.
u 1 moI know the concepts of changing a tire, but never had to do it. My wife does it now and my dad did it before that. The only thing I dont know for sure is how to/where to safely place the jack. No big deal anyway, we have AAA if I need it.

1 moI’ve never changed a tire, but I think I could figure it out. I have no idea how to change the oil. I do know how to jump start a car and push start a standard.

True! I’d rather pay to have someone else do that for me though.
I know how to change a flat tire. But the last one happened when I was on the highway. I had to stop in the first available spot, with cars driving past at high speed. It was more sensible to call a tow truck.
