Why do people buy expensive pets but rarely take them to the vet?

People like the idea of having a pet but they don't like the responsibility that comes with it.

You can buy a good dog for $800 if you have connections and lots of knowledgeable friends while a basic medical service for your dog might cost thousands per treatment. I knew a teacher from my old church who made $70,000 a year, and she spent $10,000 on life saving medical care for her pet dog and her dog died anyway. When our dog died 10 years ago, we spent around $400 to have his body cremated and removed from our back yard. If that is how much a dead dog costs, imagine how much medical treatment to save a living dog costs.

Buying a pet is an emotional decision that causes dopamine flooding.
Going to vet an unpleasant duty, people on mental level of 12-14 yo. kids don't like responsibility.
