Newly adopted dog ran into the forest at night and won’t come back—what now?

I accidentally let it out of the yard while I was doing something else, and he took off as fast as mortally possible and hit the trees and bushes about 500 feet behind the house. I tried calling him and whistling and clapping hands over and over to get his attention, but it's like he's deaf or something. He doesn't come to his name or other attempts to make friendly sounds nor get his attention. Now it has been 30 minutes and I doubt I'll ever catch the dog again, since it's dark now, and again he doesn't respond to verbal commands or anything else.

We adopted him about a month ago and had this problem twice during the daylight, but he eventually came back both times. I don't think I'll be able to catch him at night.

It's part rat terrier and part something else. I don't know. It's adopted.

Well, looks like he is a forest dog now. Maybe move into the forest and he can adopt you back.

Yeah. He just came back a few minutes ago, but it's kinda bad because he came from the road direction.

Yeah, I hope you're right. As long as he doesn't get on the road.

He was trained to sleep in a crate at night so he doesn't tear stuff up as much or get lost, and he goes in the crate when you just say "crate," so I doubt he's truly deaf.

We have two other similar dogs, but they are females, both part rat terrier/jack russell, but they both obey voice commands and come right back to you if they get out of sight or something.

The new male dog acts hard-headed. He has been particularly hard to train to "sit" or just "stay down" and not jump on people. He's 9 months old or so, but whoever owned him before us must not have trained him for anything.

You're probably right. He might come back when he gets hungry.
