when he's just around me, one on one, he's so sweet and nice. I always have to initiate conversation though. he defiantly tries to keep the conversation going.

however, when he's with his friends it's like he completely ignores me. he doesn't talk to me (I don't initiate conversation lol). him and his friends also talk about girls. like he said how 'hot' one girl was. I also think he MIGHT (not for sure!) have hooked up with a girl and his friends started talking about it and then my crush was like shut up. (I was literally next to him)

when he's with his friends he seems like he is like... one of those pervs but when he's with me he seems like a gentleman.

he also only stares at me when he thinks I'm not looking, but avoids my gaze when I'm near him

It's because he's a stupid guy. Guys live to impress their guy friends. There care about impressing other guys more than impressing girls. He wants to act cool and tough with his friends, but he's really the sweet guy you only get to see.

He's faking himself when he's with his friends. He's actually how he behaves with you, sweet and cute. He probably thinks that if his friends would see him act sweet and caring towards you, they will joke around with him.
