I'm not sure there is any more recognizable fabric that says, "Winter," than a plaid. There is something about the fabric that lets you know the holidays are approaching, the weather is getting colder, and one is need of something evocative of the season to usher it in.
There are several types of plaid, but some of the most popular are:

Plaid was a staple of both the 70s punk fashion era and the 90's grunge era in fashion and revolves in and out of mainstream fashion, but always remains a staple, especially for men, throughout the year.
Plaid is a very busy pattern all by itself, so it doesn't need a lot of extra added to it to make it pop by way of accessories. You want to try to stick to one type of plaid pattern at a time unless you like a more eclectic look. If you are on the petite side, look for a smaller pattern which won't swallow you up. If you are taller or plus sized, you can more easily pull off a larger or wider pattern.
When it comes to what to wear with it, pair your plaids with pieces in solid colors so as not to overwhelm the plaid and to let the plaid shine on it's own, or just wear an outfit of solid plaid against neutral tights, stockings, or accessories.
