I have to answers to this question. 1 is about what I find attractive in women. 2 is about how I feel about beauty standards. Not sure which kind of answer you want to I’ll try and be brief and give you both.
1. I am not traditionally attracted to this look I find it is too middle of the road and bland, sometimes there is a stand out lady who is just gorgeous but most of the time I’d pass. I would also argue as well as what you have said that their is a cultural bias. Women with traditional Anglo features are favoured on media. Little noses, tall with either slim body types or hourglass. His is shifting a little but you’d till see it’s influence. I think it’s uninteresting and usually photoshopped. If you find other features attractive then you find you are quickly disappointed by most of what tv and movies shows you. That’s not to say that these types of ladies are good looking they are just over represented.
2. I think it’s shitty, I get we all want to look at good looking people but there are so many kinds of good looking. It’s the same thing with how buff all men are in tv now. I want to watch real looking people! I want a god damn variety of looks because it’s more interesting and frankly more representative of real life.
The first woman is really very attractive. Minus her hairstyle though.
What’s wrong w her hairstyle
Not a fan to be honest, it feels like they all look generic and due to seeing them so much I fail to see them as personalities. To the point that if someone asks me if I think they look beautiful I will say no cause I only see the conventional basic attractive features and I see no beauty in that, no more than in a soulless doll.
It is quintessentially part of the media at this point but having more unconventional main characters is also becoming more popular because people want to see people who reflect society more widely with the body positivity movements
You mean, people want to see fat people?
No, most people do not actually want to see fat people.
@Thatsamazing I'm not saying necessarily fat people alone but I do think there has been more of an influence to show people of different sizes , shapes and ethnicities in the media to make people feel more accepting of themselves instead of constantly aspiring to look like an unrealistic role model.
Ethnicity has literally nothing to do with body fat percentage and I have no idea why it would be lumped together in the same sentence or category. People really need to stop doing that. Different ethnicities, great. Fat people, no. And that is what you are saying, whether you realize it or not.
@Thatsamazing I never ended for ethnicity to be in relation to body fat. Yes there are films that have made fat people key characters and I personally don't find it problematic. For women especially having other women constantly appear in the media be photoshopped and skinny with long hair makes other women who don't conform to these standards feel more insecure. If you want some examples dumplin stars a "fat" girl and is a perfect example of the media trying to encourage girls to stop valuing their self worth alone on the size of their clothes or the number on the scale.
Uh... girls on television aren't photoshopped. That's physically impossible.
And basically-- so what? I'll never look like Ryan Gosling or guys that look exactly like him, but I acknowledge that if I want to be seen as conventionally attractive (and I do, like most people), I will try as hard as I can to exercise and eat healthily in order to have a physique that is as much like his as possible, since that is what a majority of females find attractive. Or I could do what you're suggesting a majority of females do, which is-- whine about it. Great, except that whining about it doesn't burn calories and won't change my wardrobe or haircut.
@Thatsamazing i mean in magazines or online in pictures it's part of the media. Just out of interest what do you think of women like Kim Kardashian who sell products like fit tea that promote unhealthy weightloss methods and are effectively just laxatives.
Kim Kardashian is a moron, trash, and unattractive. Laxatives are not effective weight loss. I will say that it isn't logical for people to do what you're implying without directly saying it, which is that when the correct message of "lose weight" is said by someone regarding an overweight or obese person, the response to that by others (you, this time) is always something in the vein of "well what about anorexia and why are you promoting these unhealthy forms of weight loss that anyone with any medical sense knows are not good options." Uhh... yeah, what about them. "Lose weight" and "you're promoting anorexia or unhealthy weight loss" or whatever other similar implication, are not connected. If anything, the lie of "all bodies are beautiful" or whatever is promoting obesity, heart disease, and diabetes-- the opposite is not true.
@Thatsamazing I can see where your coming from in a way. But personally having these women who I would never be able to look like has always been fuel to insecurities that I wouldn't be good enough. Despite being two sizes below the average in the uk and eating moderately healthy and getting exercise it has never felt enough because I didn't have the long beautiful hair , the thigh gap and perfectly toned abs. Having women who show that who you are is just as important in the media has been a great help to me.
Great, and that's fine. There's still no sense in lying to ourselves (and maybe you do, maybe you don't) by saying that everyone is equally attractive or whatever-- because here's the thing, that rationale only seems to be applied when aimed the female direction. Females don't also claim that all males are equally attractive, and are willing to date all of us equally. Why should the lie of "everyone is attractive" be spread, then? I have to be realistic, as a male, in terms of guys that are more attractive than me. Yet females for several years now, due to the Internet, have been fed the lie that girls who are ^ actually attractive, like that girl up there, and everyone else are all equal, and saying otherwise (like, correctly for example, that thinner girls within reason are on average more attractive than heavier girls, and literally everyone knows it, including other girls) gets you a lot of criticism. It's dumb. People need to be realistic and keep trying to improve themselves.
