Honestly, I never cared for tanning. Women with naturally darker skin pull it off better no matter how hard fair or pale skinned women tried, who in turn looked better avoiding the tans (other than the extreme sickly-looking pasty that some would have). While not a specific look however, I think women back then were overall much more sensible and classy with their efforts, while now it seems everyone either tries too hard, or not at all (or even sabotage themselves) with very little in-between.
