Depends if it's a cream, or powder eyeshadow. Generally speaking, powder eyeshadows are safe to use past their expiration date, as long as you don't notice anything strange about them, but it's always good to take precautions:

-Don't keep them in the bathroom where they could absorb humidity.

-Don't dip wet brushes directly into the pans, load both sides of your brush with product and then spray it with water.

-Wash your hands before swatching them or applying eyeshadow with your fingers.

    (ETA: clean your brushes regularly).

Now cream or liquid eyeshadows are another story...

It may cause a reaction depending on your skin, how the eyeshadow is stored and if it’s been opened or not. You could do a patch test on your hand to see how your skin reacts to it? Or just buy new eyeshadow.

It's a discontinued quad that I've always been in love with not a natural formula but I will. do the patch test.

If the product is a natural makeup formulation without a strong preservative, it may also go bad, even if sealed. All preservatives in makeup do break down over time, even if the product is unopened, so you should never keep any product for more than 3 years.
