Why do girls like having such long nails?

I understand wanting to make your nails pretty and shaping them and such but like some women have extremely long fake nails that just seem a bit impractical tbh. What's the appeal as opposed to shorter nails?

I don't know but I hate it. I try to keep my nails as short as possible.
