Pick Up Lines (That Aren't Really Pick Up Lines)

So what do we say in 2015 when we want to talk to a complete stranger? Asking for the time is doesn't cut it since everyone carries a phone. Old fashioned lines like, “Who took the curves off the road and put ‘em on you?” is out because hey, that never really worked anyway.

Today, with so many people dependent on devices and gadgets and terrified of eye contact, the dreaded how-am-I-going-to-talk-to-her/him has left a lot of people without solutions.

It seems that too many people watched Napoleon Dynamite and took it to heart. No, we’re not all Summer Wheatlys. Guys can certainly approach women and some will be hit-or-miss, but you never know unless you try.

Auntie Ozanne's 5 Point Plan to Starting a Conversation

1. Compliment them on something they are wearing, a tattoo they have, or something they are reading. Don’t just look for anything that might lead to a dead-end fearing you won't find a follow up thought. Try to take notice of something that you actually can talk about. If you have something in common with something you see it will make a conversation a bit more natural. “Oh, you have a Kobo.. how do you like it? Have you seen the new Kindle Voyage yet? I'm shopping for one and can’t decide between the two.”

2. Ask them if they are aware that they have a doppelganger. Choose someone flattering and tell them it’s a compliment. “How often do you get the Angelina Jolie-thing?” If she asks what you mean, then tell her. If you don’t know, ask, “Do people ever tell you that you look like someone famous?” For some, they’ll say yes and pipe up who it is. If they say no, and ask who you mean, you can just say, “I can’t think of it now.. it will probably hit me at two in the morning… better give me your number so I can tell you when I figure out who it is.”

3. “Pay It Forward”. If you see a guy in a coffee shop line-up, ask him if you can buy him his coffee. Excuse? You’re not being creepy, you just had something nice happen to you earlier and you’re just paying it forward. Soooo maybe it’s not exactly true.. it’s a way to get the guy to smile and talk to you in the lineup before you get your coffees, and maybe even sit together to continue your conversation.

4. Figure out their accent. Even if they don’t have one, and sound local – someone could still sound like they’re from somewhere else if you believe it enough to ask. If you are in a position to hear her talking to someone, just ask, “You sound like you’re from the north, am I right?” Of course you might be wrong, but for many people, they are bound to be from somewhere and proud of it. Ask where they’re from and start talking about it. If they’re local, then tell them it's interesting that you hadn’t bumped in to them before!

5. Talk shop. If you’re out and you see someone on the job, set yourself apart from their crappy customers. If you go to a pub, restaurant, clothing store, gift shop – don’t be the leering creep, instead let them know they’re good at their job. Ask how long they’ve been working there, and is it their goal to do something else? Once you get someone talking, you can interject about yourself and your work.

Wherever you go, know that you have a chance to make your opening lines come across as just friendly talk as long as you think of it that way. Most people can pick up on nervous opening lines, and if the person isn’t comfortable or natural, chances are it’s going to kill the moment. You want to pretend as if what you say might be the last thing you'll ever say to that person -- and you’ll be okay with it. The more confidence that you have that you just mean well is noticeable. Look for cues from the other person to know that your opening lines were welcomed, and if so, then let the other person hook on to the opportunity and engage in your first conversation together!
