It's almost impossible to change the current societal norm and the fact that men are taught that they are the one's that are supposed to do the approaching for centuries doesn't help the matter in hand either. Be careful approaching from where she can't see you. If you startle her then she won't be able to feel comfortable about you. The only time I approach from out of site is if I have a club and am preparing a caveman maneuver.
Consider a busy college campus. It's difficult to notice everyone from all angles. The lone girl on a park bench is everyone's dream scenario, not entirely realistic.
