Guys, Why would a guy clear his throat around girls?

We were sitting at a table in a restaurant. My church choir went out to eat. There was already someone sitting in front of me. He sat on the other side of the table two chairs away from the person in front of me. There was a girl sitting on my right. Everyone starts eating & we're talking. We talked about jobs, where we went to college, etc. This guy has mentioned once before about gazing into my eyes. (We could stand on opposite sides of the church & gaze into each other's eyes while we sing. We were doing a duet.) He has complimented me on several occasions about my clothes/singing. Tonight he complimented my scarf. It was one that I had made myself. He was mostly talking to the girl beside me... but he did make eye contact with me some. I was looking at him at times & other times I was looking at the tv. When he finished eating... he had started asking the girl questions about her boyfriend. Where did he work? What do they like to do? That kind of thing. I'm sitting there thinking this is kind of awkward... but I'm looking at the tv. She answered his questions about the guy she is dating. Then the boy goes quiet & then he clears his throat. I look at him... he looks at me. I look at the tv. Then he talks to the girl some more about her boyfriend & again clears his throat. I look at him... he looks at me. Then I look at the tv again. After a little while he says he thinks he ate too much & I look at him & then he said he is going to go. He gets up says something to the lady sitting in front of me and then leaves. Why did he clear his throat like that? He didn't have allergies. Was he wanting to get my attention? or Was he wanting me to chime in with... so I don't have a boyfriend? Which is true... I don't. or was he thinking of asking me out or something? I don't know. I don't have much experience. I'm confused. I just found it strange he was talking to her about her boyfriend and then clearing his throat... around me. Guys, why would you do that? Help?

I mean I realize he said he ate too much but could he have used that as an excuse? Did he get nervous and that was why he left early?

I think he was trying to connect the dots with you. First by talking about the right topic: relationship status. Then he gave you the *nudge nudge* *wink wink* by consistently clearing his throat and then making eye contact with you when you looked at him. In my infinite wisdom, I think he was trying to have you chime in so he can figure out if you are single or not. If he's got the balls, he'll ask you out on a date or coffee relatively soon if he can read you well enough.

Come to think of it... when we were talking about jobs... he said he worked for a library and played the piano at the university. I knew that... but he said he keeps himself busy. He also said right now though he isn't very busy. He said he hopes the Spring isn't as busy as last spring either. Then I said it was hectic and he said yes. How did I miss that? Lol!

if you are also into him, take a step forward and ask him for a coffee and book date or something since he worked at a library? Then ask for some recommendations and get it so you guys have something to talk about?

He many have been sick... it should be semi-evident. I personally do not know. Try asking him.

He sounded normal. He didn't sound sick or anything. He doesn't have a high voice but it isn't really deep either. It's in between.

Maybe he really was trying to get your attention. Try asking him if he is okay or if something is wrong next time he does it. I thought that act wasn't used anymore lol.

I don't know. I thought it was strange that he keeps complimenting me but then he was talking about this girl and her boyfriend to her. It was weird.

Not really. I don't know much about him... besides his job... he freelances playing the piano, plays at the university and works at a library on the same campus. He started playing when he was 8 and played in churches for 14 years until recently when he joined the choir at my church.

Hmm, maybe he didn't know what to talk about lol. This is quite the confusing matter. Maybe he is trying to figure out if you have a boyfriend as it may be demising to ask you first. He instead goes for her and hopes you might join in or something.. That is definitely awkward though..
