You both reconnected after those two years and it seems they like/missed you even more from when you were absent. You're more acquainted with each other and are always greeting each other. They are trying to be more open with you now, but still acquainted. They are friendly and nice towards you, talk to you more when it's just you two alone, and show subtle signs of liking you but isn't entirely sure how you feel about them.
So even if this is the case, is it too much to get your crush a simple gift? Like a tumbler/thermos for their birthday?

I think your intuition is dead on. Any gift sends a message in addition to the obvious "happy birthday". If you give him a new PlayStation it sends a weird message. If you give him a modest gift, that's probably ok. In this case, less is more. No reason to over-give.
Acquaintance friends have considered getting me gifts for my birthday. They haven't followed through though. Mostly because the gifts they consider getting are more than they're willing to spend on a gift (even for family members). It makes sense, most of the time I won't buy a gift that exceeds $50 for a person. If I had kids, I would probably revise that and buy things that cost more than $50, but fewer than if they were all below $50.
Gift can be given to anyone even for a stranger. Gifting is something which we give to see someone happy or to say that they mean something to us. If everything goes it will reignite things and if it doesn't then no harm he will see it as a gift from a frn. But no matter what it will convey your fondness and tells him that you care. Fyi men love affection and we don't get much gifts from anyone so it will make him happy
