Should I ask him out via Email?

Im a studnet and we have acourse taht is altenrating every second week (lecture and exercise). The exersice session is held by older students. And last semster (almost a year ago) this cute guy was teaching my group. Eversince i thought about asking him out since i find him so cute and crushing on him. Sadly i never see him at my uni and when he is is never alone. The only idea i had is to wright him an email. But somehow think its a little weird. It shos taht i def know his name and made research. Also will he know who i am maybe he doesn't know my name (and i will NOT send a pic of me). I aslo dont know what to wright exactly. I just dont know if thats a good idea. What will he think?
