Why do people try to start random conversations with me?

I can be minding my own business and have people start random conversations or start talking to me I don’t even know them…. And I’m standing there 10 minutes later like WTF…. Have I really been talking to a gas station clerk for 10 minutes

It's probably your body language and the expression on your face. Makes them think you're open to conversation. Somehow you're not conveying that "grinch"/"get lost" vibe properly or convincingly...

Older women at Dillards and JC Pennies do it the most

Well... D's and Pennies aren't exactly standard places for guys your age to hang out unless you're there with your mom to help her with her bags...

The mens section and I see plenty around my age. Especially around Christmas

(Yeah, I take my son around that time of year too... To have him fitted for new shirts and sweaters. It's not the sort of place he goes on his own.)

I don't think I've ever had someone try to start a conversation with me so maybe it's just that you are an approachable person and that's a good thing isn't it
