Why does this guy stare and check me out but only talk to my friends?

There’s a guy on my missions trip who has me confused, and I’d like some honest male perspectives.

I’ve caught him looking at me from a distance multiple times. There have also been at least two occasions where I was sitting down and he was walking by. Before he got close, I noticed him looking at me from farther away. Then, as he walked past me, he glanced down at me and held eye contact longer than what felt normal for a passing glance.

I’ve also caught him checking me out before.

The confusing part is that he doesn’t really talk to me. He’ll talk to my friends when they’re sitting right next to me, but not necessarily to me directly.

Men, what would be your honest explanation for this? If you’ve done something similar, what was going through your head? Is it usually attraction, shyness, intimidation, curiosity, or does it not mean much at all? Why would a guy give a girl lingering eye contact from time to time but still avoid talking to her? And why talk to her friends but not her?
