Lmao. Even AI Atatürk would probably cry if he saw his own name written in Arabic and think, "I failed."
He built a secular state while pretending to be a Muslim before a population that was overwhelmingly Muslim, even though he was not a Muslim himself in private.
He replaced the Arabic script with the Latin alphabet. The Quran was also translated into Turkish. A quote often attributed to him is: "Let my people read it and see what nonsense that Arab son (referring to Muhammad) came up with."
Another statement attributed to him is: "Muhammad began inviting people to a religion he had created and believed to be true. That religion is called Islam."
During his rule, religious figures such as İskilipli Atıf, who opposed the Hat Law and criticized the adoption of Western-style hats and clothing, were executed after being tried by Independence Tribunals.
His era also laid the foundations for policies that later resulted in headscarf bans in many public institutions and workplaces, restrictions that continued in various forms into the 2000s.
So portraying him as an Arab is pretty ironic. 👍
I liked seeing different alphabets associated to names I usually read in Latin, it's not personal lol, but I get the irony with Atatürk westernization processes. However, is that Arabic? Because the page said it was Ottoman Turkish...
Yeah, it's Ottoman Turkish, but it uses a script derived from the Arabic alphabet.
We are glad Turkey switched to the Latin alphabet because Turkish relies heavily on written vowels, while the Ottoman script usually didn't write short vowels. That made reading much harder and often required people to guess words from the context, which was one of the reasons literacy was relatively low at the time.
Thank you for all these cultural elements 👌🏼

This picture of young Staline is regularly cited for fun, as it makes him looking like some Latin hipster 😎
But there's a trick, the smoothed quality and contrast of that old pic helps a lot in giving that impression
he is a good looking Latin hipster!!😂😅
None of the above obviously!
