I'd start by trying to say some Norwegian phrases.
God dag!- Hello (formal)
Hei! - Hi! (informal - most used)
Morn/Hallo- Hello (informal)
Hvordan står det til?- How are you? (generally speaking)
Hvordan har du det?- How are you?
Jeg har det bra.- I have it well.
Takk, og med deg?- Thanks, and with you?
Hva heter du?- What is your name?
Snakker du engelsk/tysk/fransk/spansk/svensk/dansk/irsk(?)/russisk?- Do you speak English/German/French/Spanish/ Swedish/Danish/Irish/Russian?
Ha det bra!- Good bye! (informal)
Ha det! - Good bye! (informal and the most used)
Adjø.- Good bye (very old-fashioned and formal)
Vi sees!- See you later
Vi snakkes! - Talk to you later (like "see you later")

Funny you mention that. I just earlier answered a question from a girl who's trying to get rid of a clingy Norweigian guy. So apparently she has the opposite problem.
"Nothing American"? Sorry, but please clarify...
I met a Norwegian guy and he seemed fine:
If he approaches first and you're interested...
Hello (smile), Hello (smile)...
Ask directions, get directions... OR Ask to dance, get to dance...
It's like playing chess/checkers. Precise. Not too much drama. Logical -- one of you is a tourist, so nothing serious is in play.
For a better idea of what they're used to, observe Norwegian girls...
im a norwegian girl, and have never had problems with getting attention from the guys. You just have to be happy and open. If you go out, just try to talk to the guys. Si hi, ask questions (not to many) and try to get to know them. And don´t use those American things you talked about, I don´t think that will work ;)
