What does it mean when a guys says he 'maybe' likes you?

I told this guy I like him and asked if he felt the same and he said maybe. I thought he might be just saying this because he was too scared to say no, but he then told me a couple of days later that he meant what he said when he said maybe. I would've asked what maybe means but I didn't want to push it or seem desperate.

What should I take a maybe as? If he really liked me he would've just said yes

He not sure in his mind..meaning he may like you or later he may not like you..spend more time with each other,mayb it will turn to a YES :)
