Did he play the "sympathy" card with me?

Known this married guy for over a year. Our conversations were work related or "how was your weekend" and never flirted. About five months ago he spilled his guts to me about his wife, wish he never got married, they never have sex, he has never cheated on his wife, but he is "this close" . He said to call him to go to the movies, the gym, lets do lunch, etc. This went on for about two months, I listened and asked him "If you have never cheated on your wife, why start now?" He replied he is fed up with her, no affection in the marriage, they are together because of the kids. I tested it by taking him up on his offer one day and said "lets go to the gym this weekend". After that he has avoided me, will not look me in the eyes when conversing. Is he playing the sympathy card to all females, just to get some? I don't buy never cheated on his wife line. What did I say or do to scare him off? Or did he give up, because I did not jump into bed with him in a "timely manner"?
