You are best off telling him a little bit about yourself. Your name, how you found his profile, and maybe a little bit about what your interests are. End the message by telling him you like meeting new people (which kinda softens the effect of you having just stalked him, lol).
It is pretty hard for a girl to come off creepy to a guy. Women instinctively need to fear things like rape, whereas men don't. Unless you do something extreme like show up randomly at his house without him telling you where he lives you most likely won't be seen as creepy. You might come off as desperate, but it is hard to come off as creepy.
Sending someone a message isn't bad. He already accepted your friend request. So unless your message is something creepy like "I watched you through your window last night." I wouldn't worry about it.

I would always be happy to receive messages on Facebook, typically from women, it means they're INTERESTED to me at some level, and if I INVITE them out straight away, they would agree, easy thing!
However, If its me who message the stranger girls, girls tend to think men are more creepy/hacker..therefore, it's harder for men to attract stranger women online because its words, words, words, women are emotional beings, sub-communication is important.
If you don't know the guy then you should absolutely do it. You will never ever have a chance with him if you don't send the message. If you send the message and he isn't interested, then you're in the exact same position as if you hadn't messaged him. But there is also a chance that he'll be into you. You really have nothing to lose.
I got a FR on FB from this girl who I have no idea who she is. I want to ask her why she friended me? But the last time some girl friended me that I didn't know I asked her why? She tells me she thought I was someone else and unfriends me I was like WTF? The sad thing is both of these girls are good looking I'm not so my guess is their going around pretending to be interested in ugly guys like me and wanting us to talk just to laugh at us.
That's not creepy, gees. This creepy stuff has gone too far. Just message him and say, hey whats up? Make small talk about anything. Start a convo then if it goes well, go into something more.
Guys don't have the same preoccupation with creepiness that girls have. It's like a morbid fascination your sex has. Just thank him for accepting and ask what he's been up to. Simple.
