I am very against eating live animals, exactly why I don't eat any sea food in most cases. Eating an octopus live is inhumane - as is boiling crabs alive. It's wrong and if that's the only way you can enjoy a food, you need to really reconsider. Your taste and wants should NEVER matter more than humane treatment of animals.

You can live a long and healthy life on a vegan diet too. Most apes including our ancestors up until a certain point were actually herbivores but even today we see other apes supplementing with bugs and small animals in certain cases. In the case of humans, the only reason why we have evolved the way we did is probably because of climate change and being out of the rainforests. That doesn't mean that we should just stick to our current diet. By the way, when i was talking about complex organisms i was mostly talking about mammals. Certain kinds of fish can actually be eaten with no problem. I am not just talking about nutrition, but the complexity of the organism itself. A cow can literally cry, and all of the hormones pumping through its body as it has enough self awareness to know what is going to happen is going to effect you.

You want humans to stop eating meat? That is like expecting other animals to stop eating meat. Whether you like it or not, humans have evolved to become omnivores due to certain circumstances unlike other apes. Nutrition wise veganism is not a natural diet which is why we need supplementation in the first place. Animals contain the 9 essential amino acids that humans cannot make on their own because nature has intended it to be that way. Most plants and fruits do not contain 9 essential amino acids for humans because nature did not intend for you to just eat that. Then we get into all of the other enzymes present in meat that isn't present in vegan diets or good bacteria. To be mad at humans for doing what nature intended is being mad at nature itself. Its a battle you can never win. That isn't to say that humans should continue to eat meat, but you are lying to yourself about life in general if you do not accept the fact that nature in general is cruel. Do you think plants are stupid? Because grass can send signals of pain to warn of danger and trees are also able to communicate. All life has a right to live in this logic.

In this resteraunt they seem to be cutting the tentacles off of a live octopus. I don't know how they did it at the resteraunt you went to, but this is torture. If you kill the animal first then it feels nothing. If they killed the octopus first then I wouldn't care, but the kept it alive just to inflict pain by cutting off it's legs.

I generally believe that animals should be treated in such a way as to minimize stress and pain and that they should be fully utilized If I choose to elevate a handful of different animals out of the possibility of being killed for meat , like my two cats then I’m fine with that too. But overall, no it should want bother me that when I catch a trout and clean it that it experiences pain and it’s still alive for a few moments. Same with the octopus. It doesn’t bother me that it experiences pain for a bit then dies.

The difference between the octopus and the fish is that you are trying to kill the fish quickly. In comparison it would be like catching a fish, keeping it alive for a few days in a tank, and cutting its fins off while it's still alive. It's like when poachers catch a shark, cut it's fins off, and then they leave it in the ocean to suffocate (cause sharks can only breath while swimming). It's unnecessary suffering.

It's like the practice of Foie Gras is very exceptionally inhumane, but still a lot of cooks who prefer it over more humane methods. I am not a saint for sure in this context, and I've also hunted and killed and consumed animals in the past as well as fishing. I do at least eat these things, you know, I'm not doing for sport -- and I also consume organs and such -- whole animal. I don't waste much.

I actually don't necessarily disagree here. It's considered a delicacy live, and just something I tried while visiting South Korea. There's kind of a balancing act between empathy for the creature and sort of being polite as a guest. I erred on the latter side. But even with the humane factors aside, I genuinely do prefer it killed (ideally in a very swift and human way) and chopped up.

Foie Gras is a bit different, you aren't torturing the animal to death. It's a little inhumane to force feed with a tube like that, but I don't think it's that bad since, in theory, it shouldn't really hurt the animal. We force feed humans when necessary and while it's not something I would want, I certainly don't think it's anywhere near the same level of cruelty as eating a live animal.

I have no problem with hunting, as long as you don't intentionally cause unneccessary pain for the animal.

Again, what I have a problem with is torturing live animals. Just imagine being in the position of that octopus, having your limbs chopped off while you're still alive. Just imagine eating any other animal while it was alive, and then ask yourself why octopus is different.
