Vegemite even in Australia is a stable of the "poorer" class. Like spam in the US.
Pretty much it originated as a means of getting nutrients, etc. that they couldn't otherwise afford and thus became as common as butter. When you grow up eating the stuff because your parents did & their parents did... you don't know it's fucking awful.

The first time I ever heard the term was in the lyrics of this song.
https://www.youtube.com/embed/hfmxO-HQ5rUI've never had it, but I once bought some walnut butter, and it was disgusting. There was no sugar in it like peanut butter.
I am Australian. I grew up eating Vegemite.
The mistake that non-Australians make is that they put too much Vegemite on the bread.
Vegemite should be applied as a thin smear.
As @purplepoppy says we have My Mate Marmite
The meaty version is Bovril

Yes, when I was in Australia. I was warned not to spread Vegemite onto bread like it was Peanut Butter or Nutella, so I spread a tiny amount onto a piece of toast and took a bite. It wasn't nearly as nasty as I had expected, but it's nothing I'd ask for again.
I was introduced to Vegemite on toast several years ago when I was working on a project in Australia. It was okay but nothing special. I brought a couple jars of it to my home in US for my then-wife and kids to try... to put it bluntly, they were not impressed... jam and jelly was better.
My colleagues in Australia explained that "it's an acquired taste."Its OK, but I would not go wild about it, I use it like I would a condiment in sandwiches, it is similar but not quite the same as Marmite, how much you like either depends which was available when/where you were brought up, I live in the UK and Marmite was the one I'm used to , but my Cousin brought up in Australia prefers Vegemite.
I haven't but have a friend who lives in Australia. He said it tastes like a skidmark you'd find on a gross person's underwear.
The British equivalent is marmite and that's like rimming a dead cat. Usually I love strong tasting food but it's just foul.
I had some vegetarian ground beef that I got in bulk for cheap one time, it tasted fine, but cooked like crap as it didn't produce any fat or oils. I just mixed it with italian sausage and it was a-ok. What is vegemite?
I have. It's not terrible, but I just consider it (and Marmite) to be a poor man's Bovril.
Over the last 10 years, I have made at least 12 - 14 trips to Australia. I have even sat at the same table where people did consume vegemite. I have never tasted it. I am old enough to know not to try anything described as an acquired taste!
Here in the UK it is called Marmite, and yes I have. I grew up eating it with cucumber sandwiches. The only thing is , it contains colossal amounts of salt so I only eat it once in a while.
I only tried it once, at an Australian restaurant. It was different. I'm in no rush to try it again, although it wasn't awful.
Didn’t really care for it… but it was okay on toast with fresh avocado…. Kinda like putting soy sauce on the avocado 😎😋
I was buying bread from a man in Brussels, he was six foot four and full of muscles.
I’ve heard only bad things about this. I have not tried it and most likely will never try it.
yeah... and it is okay, but not something I would need to do often
I have. An Aussie friend introduced me to it. It's awful.
yeah. it's ok. people on social media just spread it like nutella, which is bullshit. of course it's gonna be way too salty like that.
No, that's one of those weird products that foreigners eat. No interest thank you.
I've never had vegemite and frankly I don't ever want to try it because I've heard its disgusting
I have not, But I understand Australians really like it.
It's a little saltier than I'm used to but very good.
